Teach your dog a hand signal for “good boy” so they can “hear it” when they’re old.

@amcvittie @Lazarou this made me happier than anything I’ve seen today.

@amcvittie We have been using sign language with Joch and his late auntie Bonnie since they were 12-13 years old. Bonnie said goodbye at 18 yrs 3 months, Joch is now 16years 6 months.

We wiggle our fingers when going to pat so they knew they were getting pats and not being handed food that they could not see very well.

Have to wake them for meals sometimes. They wake with a start if you touch them when sleeping. Blow on their ears to wake them gently since they can't hear us call for them.

@weezmgk @amcvittie You’re a good caregiver. Thank you.

@amcvittie @RMiddleton Great idea! Doing that with mine starting tomorrow

@amcvittie our dog is mostly blind and completely deaf :-(
But can smell food from the next room.

@ijk64 treats always communicate. :) smell is their most important sense

@amcvittie I always wanted to make a remote control for dogs - each button gives a verbal command at frequencies only they can hear :p

@amcvittie

I think this may be the first time a post about dog sign language made me cry. <3

@amcvittie Don't forget the all-important love in your eyes when you give the signal.
