Reminder: remote work does not equate working from home. It just means *you* get to choose where to spend your working time. If you prefer an office, there are plenty of options to choose from almost anywhere in the world. And as an added bonus, it’ll be an office that comes without the usual politics and drama.

@anderseknert “Almost anywhere in the world” - this used to be true, but some companies are now limiting the countries where their employees can do remote work . This is allegedly due to the impact of local laws.

@anderseknert for me it actually means work from home, got two small kids and can't handle office smalltalk for more than a few minutes at a time. the latter fails in part because i'm profoundly unable to treat subjects like sports as innocent and not bring in cheating, corruption and exploitation

@anderseknert also, no rent-an-office i've come across comes with a more ergonomic armchair than the one at home

@troglodyt That's funny — having two small kids is one of the main reasons I need to get out of my home to get anything done 😅 But of course, many prefer WFH, and that's fine. They aren't mutually exclusive options either — you can spend a few days at home and some at an office.

The point is that you get to choose :)

@anderseknert there are some interruptions but that's fine, they're fewer than when i'm at the office, which is about 2-4 times a month

i agree that choice is important, some of my coworkers seem to really enjoy the office and get stuff done there, though the team needs to be 'remote first' kind of for it to function well

my commute being quite long plays a part too, a bit more than two hours one way

@anderseknert Yep, I work from home…

…and also from coworking space, coffee shop, lobby, car, park bench, boat, mountain top, gym, plane, train, restaurant, bar, beach…

To me, the freedom to work where and when I choose is priceless. It's the whole reason I've been 100% remote for much of my career.

@anderseknert
good point. There are plenty of "hotelling" type offices for rent and could be many more.
Businesses should rent spaces near the suburbs where people live. IBM was doing that in the '90s when i worked there. I never went to the downtown office

@2CB for sure! The cost of renting an office space for someone is nothing compared to someone being unproductive somewhere they can’t get work done.
