Query: where do people buy web domains nowadays?

EDIT: went with porkbun and it was GREAT! Thanks y'all! :blobfoxheartcute:

@aronow namecheap seems alright. Was with Gandi for many, many years but they got bought and are going to hell so definitely not them!

@admin @aronow

Namecheap helped a scammer defraud and steal my friend's domain name. They are not to be trusted for recourse.

@kerravonsen @aronow that's what I heard; didn't look into it too much tbh but I do know domain prices tripled and my email service costs increased by like almost two orders of magnitude so I'm getting the fuck out regardless lol

@aronow

I’ve had good luck with porkbun but I don’t have a deep well to draw comparisons from.

@cthululemon @aronow def porkbun.

Since Google sold out to square space, porkbun seems to be the closest to the old Google service. They have reasonable registrar prices, a decent interface, and it appears that they are not out to screw you like many other registrars (including square space).

@cthululemon @aronow porkbun was way cheaper for me than gandi. That about sums up my experience, though.

@cthululemon @aronow

I’ve heard multiple people whom i trust for these things suggest porkbun lately

@aronow I was using Google Domains which I think has been sold off too squarespace. Haven't had any issues.

@ExiledKing @aronow I was using Google Domains previously. When it got sold to Squarespace, they almost tripled the price of NZ domains, which are the ones I have most of. They went from $25 to $72 per year. Needless to say, I'm out.

@essjax @aronow Wow, that is terrible. Where did you end up transferring to?

My .dev and .nets haven't changed in price yet.

@aronow
Paging @FinalGirl
Question you probably have some insight on.

I've bought some from NameCheap

@aronow I listen to too many podcasts, so I use Hover, which is fine.

@aronow I waited out the previous owner of my domain name until their renewal lapsed, then snapped it up via Hover.com which was a painless experience and a fair price.

@aronow I use hover and have no issues, but I’ve heard others use porkbun too - I only have one domain and won’t look at it again until 2032 when the registration needs renewal though

@bnut 2032?? You can do that? That's actually crazy cool

@codecat I think most allow it (but some allow more time than others). I don’t want to forget so just do it for as long as I can (it’s a lot of money up front, but that’s worth it for me). I then also have a 5 year auto repeating calendar reminder, and I have some money in their account and auto-renewal toggled on, in case I ever forget.

For some companies you may need to add more time after the initial purchase as they may not give you a choice at sign up. The first picture shows the renew button, and the second where to bump the duration.

@aronow I use dotster which got folded in to web.com. I have no feelings one way or the other about them, they work, and I don’t use any of their other services besides DNS.

@aronow

hover.com

Was my goto for a few years.

@aronow I've switched to using Porkbun (previously happy with Google Domains until it was shuttered, moved to Wordpress to avoid Squarespace - but WP still doesn't support DNSSec and then Mullenweg issues, tried moving back to ResellerClub who I used over 15 years ago but their system is borderline unusable, so just finished porting to Porkbun)

@aronow I've been fairly happy with Ionos (they used to be 1&1).

@aronow I have one suggestion before deciding who to use... check their ongoing pricing before getting yourself locked into higher fees for renewals after any 1st year 'introductory' discounts.

@lumiworx this is a great reminder, thank you!

@aronow I too have switched to porkbun from prior providers (Site5, whois, others)

@aronow My domain name provider is gandi.net - have been using them for decades. Bonus in these times: they're in the EU.

@kerravonsen they have recently been acquired, and significantly increased their prices (sometimes tripling). You might want to have a look at that!

@aronow I currently purchase mine from namecheap, because its cheap, and tbh they have been pretty nice to me. They only email when they need to, they support u2f, etc. The only real complaint I have is that their interface is quite badly designed from a user friendliness perspective.

@aronow I can help, reseller and recommendations in private only.. the rules have changed and there can be charges market varying rates. Need the desired domain/s sent by DM.

@aronow

I use namecheap or porkbun. They are both fine.

@aronow porkbun. I also used namecheap but their api is crap (does not allow to automate letsencrypt wildcards) so I switched recently.
