"I'm getting close!" My mud-spattered visitor excitedly waved his #shovel. "Are you sure you don't want want a cut?"

I shook my head. "You're doing the work, so you're welcome to whatever you find."

"No complaints!"

Eyeing the skip he was filling—at his own expense—I hid a smile. Hiding treasure and dropping clues was far cheaper than paying him to clear the garden.

I need to find some people to hire for two things:
- Editing my WIP book (YA Fantasy)
- Creating some art for a poster and a tattoo, inspired by Queen Eclipsa from Star Vs The Forces Of Evil

If you are someone who can do one of those things, or know someone who is, please let me know!

Boosts Appreciated

A while ago I discovered someone made an e-ink Portal-inspired calendar. Well last week I finally caved, and bought all the parts to make my own!

This was my first foray into using an ESP32 (as well as soldering) so all things considered, I'm happy that it's running at all given my lack of skills in the areas.

If you want to make your own, the printables page has the models and a link to the GH with the code, BoM, and build instructions:

“Mr MacReady! We’re here to rescue you!”

“Stay back! I may be infected! You may be infected! There’s a creature, it got into the dogs. and then the men. I burned it, I burned them all, but the birds… oh god the flames”

“It’s all right. You’re safe now. We know about the alien. It’s been neutralized”

“You destroyed it?! How”

“It’s been rendered safe.”

“Oh god, you’re one of THEM! Stay back, I’ll burn you all!”

“Please sir, please. Calm down. We’re human. Show him the blood test, Shin.”

“Human. Both of you. Now do me. Oh. Oh I’m still here. All those men. I …they burned ”

“Sssssh. You’re safe now. We’re from the icebreaker Aurora Australis, we got your message.”

“What. About. The. Creature. I have to know.”

“It got to our ship, we shot the birds but the ships cat…”

“Oh, no...”

“It got into the cat, and then…. Then, it went native. It’s shown no sign of malevolence or contagion since. No more malevolent than before, anyway. It sleeps twenty three hours a day, but the things it teaches us in the other thirty minutes…”

“Thirty? What? You said….the rest?”

“Skritches”

The PineNote is here! I'm planning on making a hands on video to share my experience. Let me know if you have any questions you want me to try and answer. I don't plan to do technical tests but open to collaborating on it.

First impression, feels like a quality and sturdy device. Feels good in the hand, the texture is a kinda soft grippy plastic. Pen felt good, the writing friction seems ok, I don't want to make any software qualifications until I update the device but still happy with the out-of-box experience. The wake from sleep time is essentially instant.

@PINE64 great work on the PineNote, I'm very impressed with the hardware!

Edit 2: there's renewed interest in this post, feel free to check out the first impressions video (~6 mins, which has a good bit of usage footage), in case that post isn't visible to you.

Edit: Link to blog post with thoughts after day one. Since I'm on a single user instance most people may not see the thread with info that hasn't been boosted, the post has all of it.

10 minutes into the Jacob-less standup, Maggie asked, "Have any of you heard from Jacob this morning?"

Sophia and Antonio shook their heads. Reggie said, "No".

Enzo said, "I'm going with strawberry-powered alarm clock didn't wake him up because it ran out of juice - literally."

Reggie countered, "Or he was testing a new street direction AI. He made it to the next county before he realized it was hallucinating."

Sophia jumped into the mix, "My money's on aliens. With Jacob, it's actually plausible he arranged a ride share."

Antonio responded, "Does this happen a lot? Jacob doesn't show and you take bets on why?"

Maggie smiled. "We do enjoy speculating what his next crazy project is."

Maggie's phone pinged. "Ah - mystery solved. Apparently Jacob had a flat on the way in, so he'll be here in about an hour."

"He also says 'that scenario probably didn't make it into the betting pool, did it?' Looks like he's onto us."

Right idea, wrong lens.

I usually like shooting with the Sigma 8-16mm ultrawide rectilinear lens. It distorts things in interesting ways, exaggerating distances and making close objects loom large. It also sends lines near the edges flying in strange directions... i.e. buildings tend to lean in and, if the buildings are tall, the buildings will lean backwards.

In this case, I appreciated being able to cover a wide field of view. However, the Palace of Fine Arts looks like it's being sucked into a black hole in the center of the picture

Add: This was a 15 second exposure, taken during the blue hour. 8mm.
