The world the fascists want—married women can't vote because they changed their names, queer people can't update their passports, "show your papers" to brown folks—is everyone besides white men worried they'll be a target.
And I just gotta say...people are not gonna put up with that shit for long.
@susankayequinn Targeted disproportionately at white Republican women, no less.
@dalias I'd love to see it spark a movement of women changing their names back to match their birth certificates.
@susankayequinn Yes, the backwards practice of name change for marriage can't die soon enough.
@dalias I changed my name, so I'm not gonna say everyone who does so is "backward". There are plenty of cultural practices around names that people may or may not agree with (and if you get outside American culture, there's a lot of very different name practices), but regardless... people (including queer folx!) should be able to change their names to whatever they want! Without losing their rights as a citizen! This is BASIC... which is why they're attacking it.
@susankayequinn Yes, I intentionally said "backwards practice" rather than "people", and anyone should absolutely be able to change their name for whatever reason they want. It's the cultural expectation of it, and pressure to do it, that I consider backwards.
