Saw a post about filming ICE, and:

What's the current best phone app for filming abuse by authorities and live streaming it to remote storage they can't delete by seizing device?

Something actually trustworthy not hyped shit.

Like, this isn't a situation I plan to be in, but it's one we should all be *ready for*, because some of us are going to be the unfortunate ones there when some extremely bad shit goes down, and as a matter of being a responsible human being, we should all be prepared for that as best we can.

@dalias I can't say I've actually used it but I do have ACLU Mobile Justice on my phone [edit: discontinued]

@dalias

Not an app, but try to avoid the "I'm recording you" stance unless you want to draw PD ire away from whoever they are attacking and on to you. (If you think this is wise is complex)

Put the phone in your breast pocket already recording and stroll over and be polite. Or better silent and just vaguely curious.

Many cops react to a person holding a phone at them like it's a weapon.

@dalias selfhosted? vdo ninja would probably work, it's not super high protection or anything but it's something we know a few streamers use, no hype

@SoniEx2 This is one place where self hosted is kinda a disadvantage, since a sufficiently mad authority would probably raid and steal your self-hosted infrastructure.

@dalias yeah...

it'd still take them more effort (time) than destroying a phone. but we're not sure if it would be enough.

@dalias @SoniEx2 hopefully you have off-site backups for your self-hosted stuff. In which case it wouldn't be gone unless they raid your home immediately after.

@dalias I added the ACLU app to my phone...I feel fairly certain that when you film something it sends it straight to them and doesn't maintain a local copy on your phone.

@thegardendude Other folks in this thread are saying it's about to be shut down. Like, right at the time it's most needed. It's almost like the ACLU's priorities don't make any sense... 🤔

@dalias That the ACLU's app is going to be shut down? Or the ACLU itself? That doesn't make any sense

@dalias Yikes, just read it on their website and it really does look like they're rolling over without a fight. Not good.

@thegardendude The ACLU will fight tooth and nail when a nazi's freeze peach rights are infringed, but throws their hands up in the air as soon as democracy is ending... 🤦

@dalias looks like my assumption was off the mark. Clarification on the ACLU thing from a comrade of mine

@dalias You can use your phone camera while it's locked, Android and their derivatives such as Calyx and Graphene OS let you double tap the power button to access the camera app from your lock screen. Make sure not to use forensic unlock like fingerprint, because iirc police don't need a warrant for forensic unlocking, but do for passwords and pins.

@Twitom @dalias

Wait, what now?

If we use, say, FaceID to log in, we involuntarily give up our rights to require cops to get a warrant to snoop in our phones?

I hate how that’s simultaneously ridiculous and entirely plausible.

@dalias not sure if this is feasible, but what about Signal? Send it to someone out of the country?

@annecavicchi You don't want "record it" and "send it to someone" as separate steps because you probably intend to be recording until forced to stop, at which point it's too late to send.

However I did almost post "Signal bot that auto-answers calls and saves the audio/video" as a proposed solution with the right properties. As a bonus, it looks to a cop who takes the phone like you were on a call with someone showing them what happened live, not like a recording. And makes it clear that confiscating the phone won't do anything.

@dalias first always have your phone set to open with pin, it’s protected by law vs biometrics that are not. Second open a text to yourself open video record video send message when ready. If they smash your phone, it’ll still be in the text feed. Alternatively it’s pretty easy to cup a GoPro or something similar in your hand in a way that’s not very noticeable.
Regardless I think the point with ice is to be seen recording.

@dalias nothing can do what you ask.

The limit of an unknown, the quality of the cellular signal, requires the recording quality to fit into real time uploading within that bandwidth.

As soon as you think about it you effectively need to buffer to local storage and upload... At which point choosing a usable video resolution makes sense and it's no longer real time upload at all, it's just "make a video and back it up ASAP"... Syncthing, Google photos, Dropbox, whatever works for you.

@dalias If you have an account on a PeerTube instance that is trusted and hosted outside of your current jurisdiction you can use the PeerTube Live app to stream to the server where it will be recorded. I wouldn't say it's the best app for what you're asking since it doesn't seem to have been designed specifically for that use case but it does meet the basic criteria.

As a bonus, PeerTube also has a basic browser-based editor to quickly prep a video and then share it either privately with a link or more widely through the fediverse.

@dalias you might check out Mobile Justice by the ACLU

@dalias If I am not mistaken @guardianproject has an app which might fit the use case.
