I’m puzzled by / interested in Brian Schatz voting for cloture. He’s usually solidly progressive, and willing to take on a fight. And maybe he just saw things differently this time, buuuuut…

…I wonder whether he’s taking on for the team here. Here’s the theory: maybe there are a whole lot more senate Dems who for one reason or another didn’t want a shutdown and didn’t want a fight and wanted this to pass, but felt like they •had• to vote no on cloture because of all the constituent pressure they were getting, so Schumer lines the minimum required votes from the Senators in the safest seats (which would prob include Schatz) who could most take the hit for their YES.

(EDIT: but they ended up with 2 more votes than they needed, so…maybe I’m way off base.)

@inthehands His stated reason was that Hawaii has a high proportion of federal employees.

The scuttlebutt on the hill is apparently that he got all the same fury everyone else was getting, but he has the fewest constituents, so he agreed to inflate the yea count as a favor to Schumer and Durbin. In exchange for ??? of course. But considering how much flak even the nays are going to get, he may well come to regret it.
