A fantastic post from Julia Evans here! jvns.ca/blog/2024/07/08/readli

I never thought that giant ugly match thing Atuin has would be linked to from a famous blog 😂

@ellie ooh, this looks like exactly the sort of things I want to read

@ellie i always tried to code like i might have to fix something next xmas eve, before i can go home…

@ellie Coding like it's supposed to become educational material!...
Ego: "Look at all these smart & elegant solutions to the problems I invented."

@ellie @catsalad I mean, I really like this... But that's just as terrifying.

(Edited to fix an autocorrect failure)

@ellie

Kate Gregory (the C++ consultant) put it as, "always code as if your code will be maintained by your children," which I also like.

@ellie How is that prospect not terrifying? Like, you accidentally blow a big security hole in OpenSSL or something, and then your code snippet most certainly gets featured in several blogs.

@ellie for most of us the violent psychopath thing is way more likely than the famous blog thing. I'm in awe.

@ellie
I actually like the answer one of my colleagues gave when I posted that here:

"Always code as if the guy who ends up maintaining your code will be YOU.

And remember: You might probably also know where you live!"
