This is your regular reminder that scams are now the background noise of our lives. They will take a million shots at you and threat actors only need you to let your guard down once.

@evacide Remind your parents and grandparents, folks.

@evacide yes, we know. Back into the mine again.

@evacide I get approached at gas stations, a lot. I'm usually good at saying no, but occasionally I can't tell if the story is real or just a good fake.

At those times, I think there's a choice: I can either never help anyone, or I can take a chance at being ripped off. If I never help, there's someone in real need that will be missed.

So I try to let my guard down sometimes, in the hopes that it improves someone's life.

@agreeable_landfall @evacide I was approached by a very elderly woman asking for money to pay for gas once. Several things made me think it was legit: she asked for "a few gallons", her car was old, beat to hell, and horribly dirty, she was with another elderly woman, and this was during CoVid.

I paid for 5 gallons rather than giving her cash and she seemed very grateful. Whether it was legit or not, I felt good helping someone during a really difficult time for the whole world.

@evacide can't get phished if you never check your email

@evacide This can't be overstated. I'm not ashamed to admit that I almost fell for a clever phishing attempt once while in a hurry and in the gym and I did let my guard down for a second. And I'm an IT guy with 20y of experience and an even older interest in cybersecurity.
People will mock Cuban, but what happened is completely human and can happen to anyone, especially vulnerable people or just anyone who has never heard of spoofing or social engineering. We can't rely on human resilience, we need better precautions - but certainly not Google or Apple Ai scanners.
