If you can't control your wasted resources, being on the cloud with no hard upper limit on waste is probably not going to help. :D
@tekhedd the point isn’t that the cloud makes these issues go away, but it sure does make them harder to ignore.

As an ex DBA, this chimes with me greatly 
Tools such as 'Business Objects' have a lot to answer for.
And lazy 'SQL developers' who create views on top of existing views and haven't yet learned about functions.
