Got set up to go to @NorthBayPython conference in a few weeks.

Fun little surprise for me: my employer (Sonic.net) is a Silver level sponsor this year.

@freiheit @NorthBayPython You're back at Sonic? I didn't know that. I thought you were still at the college.

@Fratm Yeah, I jumped to Sonic around end of 2021.

Given they sent layoff notices to a third of SSU IT recently I probably would’ve gotten laid off this year if I’d stayed. Things were kinda bad when I left, but seriously awful now; not sure SSU can continue long at all at this rate.

@freiheit Yeah, I've been keeping an eye on that place in the news, and it's scary. I always thought I would end up there, but nope, still at the JC. You probably wouldn't recognize anyone there now, everyone has retired lol. Maybe a couple of the programmers are still there.

@Fratm Well, looking around in portal.santarosa.edu/hrweb/emp ...

I recognize your name, of course...

Networking dept maybe Steve and Jordan were there when I left?

Programmers: Ken & Patty.

Labs: Marshall and George...

I recognize a few of the CS faculty, too: Jeffrey, Sean, Donald, and Eric...

Been over 20 years since I was there, so no surprise most people I worked with have retired or moved on.

@freiheit Jordan is on his way out, have you seen the news stories lately? He has kind of lost his mind. :/

@Fratm TBH, I don’t remember much about Jordan at all, just thought I recognized the name… and no clue which news stories you’re referring to

@freiheit Yeah been crazy around here lol.

@freiheit @NorthBayPython awesome. love sonic's service, thrilled to see them sponsoring! (I am speaking, hopefully see you after my talk :))

@glyph @NorthBayPython Well, I'll be there, along with at least a couple other Sonic employees. :)

@freiheit @NorthBayPython brb adding a brief 20 minute coda to my talk about difficulties emerging from deployment of IPv6 on home networks and inconsistencies in upnp implementations (mostly joking)

@glyph @freiheit @NorthBayPython I suggest bribing @phildini, who is already giving a "run your own ISP" talk ;)

@glyph @freiheit @NorthBayPython meanwhile I just want Sonic (or *literally anyone other than comcast*) to provide internet to my house 🫠

@amethyst
The savings in internet costs seems like it's probably worth it

@amethyst @glyph To be honest, I suspect the awfulness of comcast¹ does more for Sonic's marketing and sales than anything else does.

Footnote ¹: Or other cable company internet service monopoly in non-comcast areas.

@glyph Haha!
I'm not part of the departments responsible for any of that.

Now, if you went all-in on IPv6 and had problems with sonic.net DNS, sonic email services, or any of the various sonic websites, you could try to blame me... (I'm one of the systems/servers people)

@freiheit We were excited to hear they were interested this year! So glad to have Sonoma County's best fibre ISP helping support a growing tech community in Sonoma County. @NorthBayPython

@chrisjrn @NorthBayPython From what I heard, our new CEO mostly just wanted to support the local tech scene.

[throwing sales hat on] *California's* best fibre ISP and soon Dallas' too! (we're all over bay area, various parts of greater LA area, and expanding into Dallas, Texas this year)

@freiheit
That's great to hear! I've got a few friends in both those markets 👀
@NorthBayPython

@chrisjrn Well, if they "check availability" on sonic.com they might be able to encourage building into their neighborhoods if we're not already on track for that.

(Well, mostly only if they have utilities served by a pole, not all underground)

@freiheit
Can we convince y'all to run fibre to our venue before the event? 🤣

@chrisjrn When I attended 2 years ago it was with one of the network engineers and we literally talked about trying to convince the right people to sponsor NBPy by running fiber to the venue...

I have no clue if we have fiber going down 101 or Petaluma Blvd South near there, but I'm pretty sure we do have some running down the SMART tracks. No clue how or where we can actually access fiber on those tracks, though.
