Great news: The FDA has approved a nasal spray influenza vaccine that can be self administered. It is the first influenza vaccine does not need to be administered by a health care provider.
Having more accessible options like this is much needed to improve vaccination rates.
@luckytran @inthehands In reading about this, I learned there are already nasal vaccines, which no one had ever mentioned to me. They require administering by a professional, what’s new is the “at home?”
@adamshostack @inthehands yes, and it’s a big deal that vaccines can be self administered with similar effectiveness, as well as ordered online. Makes things potentially much more accessible.
@adamshostack
I believe there’s also been hope that a nasal vaccine for Covid might induce a stronger or different response in the airways, and be more effective at preventing initial infection. I’m not sure where all that research is at right now though. I’ll bet @luckytran is on the ball with that one?
@inthehands @luckytran There’s at least one in phase 3 trials. (Edit: Eric Topol toots about them... eg, https://mstdn.social/@erictopol/113074149878477925)
