I had to cut my visit shorter than I wanted to but from what I saw today, #handworks2023 is big!
I will be there in the morning to hear Roy Underhill at 10am if anyone is in town and wants to say hi. Then it’s back on the road to #Chicago. I managed to get one of these spiffy posters though!
One more photo because now I'm obsessed with the Veritas miniature series. They had a lot of them on display and they are magnificent little things. I mean just look at this tiny completely functional LA jack!
I didn't have much time at day two of #handworks2023 but Roy Underhill's keynote was fun! He's an absolute treasure.
One of his bits was asking #chatgpt this question: "Write a humorous keynote speech for a gathering of hand tool woodworkers from your own perspective".
The results were incredible (played to us in a robot's voice)

And for anyone that couldn't make it, you can watch his entire keynote on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fy5dtZqjDfc
@jamigibbs how did you cause me to suddenly wish I were in Iowa, even a little bit?
@jamigibbs question is... did you manage to resist the temptation? If not, what followed you home?
@Rajiv I tried to buy the Veritas miniature shoulder plane but they said they can't sell directly in the U.S. (because they're Canadian) and then gave me a 10% discount to buy it online. ha.
A walnut slab did some how jump into the back of my car though.
@jamigibbs It kind of reminds me of those tiny planes designed for luthiers, except the notion of just shrinking down a full size plane is sorta whimsical, isn't it?
@jamigibbs I just saw a Craigslist post for a bunch of those and was super tempted!
But then I thought about how often I complain that my plane is too easy to grip, and...
@danlyke I feel like if I had a collection of them, I'd just build a display case and they'd just be conversation pieces. The Fabergé eggs of woodworking.
@jamigibbs I would love to do some more luthiering, but yeah, I'm having trouble displaying my functional planes, let alone decorative pieces. Clearly I need a larger shop, that'd fix everything.
@jamigibbs Thanks for the link Jami. I caught first couple of minutes of it on a livestream that wood by wright was doing but had to put it aside to complete some work.
@jamigibbs ah nice, James Wright delivers as usual :3
@jamigibbs "Reports fed back to me from your Festools are essential for monitoring your activities."
Good one! I am afraid of power tools, I've had to admit to myself, and I'm kind of old-fashioned anyway, so I love Roy Underhill's approach.
I'm sorry I missed this event.
@jamigibbs Color me jealous! Wanted to go but just couldn’t swing it.
@jappel Next year!
@jamigibbs If they actually hold it again, which last I heard was far from certain.
@jappel Wow really?! It was PACKED. There was a line down the street this morning of people waiting for it to start.
@jamigibbs that poster makes it look like a sci fi convention
@vvv Yes! "The past and future now". Such a cool design!
@jamigibbs I didn’t know you were here too! We’re you watching the marquetry demo at 1:30 yesterday? Be sure to say hi if you see me. I look like an old woodworker. Ha!
@tomhoworth I had to leave around 1 yesterday so I must have missed that! I'll keep an eye out for you this morning though!
