It's a shame that so many people are joining mastodon[.]social and having a bad experience. Unless you enjoy consuming the internet from a fire hose, you're gonna have a bad time. Moderation there is likely not going to align with your needs.
I am fortunate to have been following @nova on Twitter and saw her posting about , such that I was able to migrate to hachyderm.io after only 12 days of joining the fediverse. Even though it's grown to >20k users, the local feed is still readable!

I also have to acknowledge that I am a cis het white-presenting half-Latina who has English as a first language and works in tech, and there’s undeniable privilege that comes with that. I usually feel like I am not a target in new spaces, and that is an experience that is not afforded to many people.

@joannalaine although it’s becoming more like a firehouse every day

@kellogh Sure, I scan local more than read every post. Maybe it'll settle down after this rush of people joining from Twitter, or migrating from other instances. Maybe it won't. Maybe I'll encounter another smaller, instance that I enjoy and add or migrate there. I like the flexibility of having options.

@kellogh @joannalaine

I’m brand new. Trying to work out the best way to scan for new stuff. I suppose once I have enough people I follow it will happen naturally

@bigsmiffy it’s a lot easier than that. you can follow the local or federated feeds, or search hashtags

@joannalaine @nova i had the exact same experience you describe!

@joannalaine @nova I was just wondering about this... it's wild to me that people use the local or federated timelines. Like people who "follow" tags on tumblr...

I follow users, and my timeline shows (re)tweets from those users and that's it.

@Ailuridae I glance at the local timeline every once in a while to see what other people who aren’t otherwise in my feed are posting about. Sometimes I find a new person to follow or post to boost and that makes it worth it.

@joannalaine @nova I think that’s part of design challenging of the platform. Distributed yes, but not evenly or load-balanced. Plus despite hosts being aligned to topics interests their is herd dynamic that kick in pretty quickly….

@rombat Nice! I was glancing at sfba.social/about, but I’d love to hear from someone first hand what the vibe is like there. What are you enjoying about it?

Mastodon hosted on sfba.socialSFBA.socialA Mastodon instance for the San Francisco Bay Area. Come on in and join us!

@joannalaine @nova mastodon[.]social looks like a really bad choice. I saw screenshots where someone there was subjected to moderation for "reverse racism". 😡

@joannalaine @nova Corollary: Send your donations to small instances run by teams with values that respect your humanity, not whiteness enforcing 🤡's at the Mastodon company who don't need it.

@joannalaine @nova Update: according to their statement on birdsite, this moderation was made in error, was corrected, and does not reflect a policy they intend to have. Unfortunate that the mistake aligns with a lot of folks' fears about the platform, though...

X (formerly Twitter)Mastodon (@Mastodon@mastodon.social) (@joinmastodon) on X@triketora This post was removed by mistake and we apologize. We’ve recently hired more moderators and the post in question was falsely interpreted to be implying something it was not. (1/2)

@dalias And I don’t want to say that “pick the right server” is a panacea for all of the ills encountered in the fediverse. It puts undue burden on people from marginalized groups to find or create spaces that are safe to be in. There are simply way more people on large instances and therefore more people looking for specific targets for their hate and intolerance.

@joannalaine
Yeah this was a problem of messaging I think. Many people on Twitter were saying "just pick a server, it doesn't matter." Well, they were only half right.

@joannalaine @nova is there any post I can read to see what experience they are having? I'm curious as I'm new to Mastodon stuff. I already moved here from techhub.

@joannalaine @nova mastodon.social was (temporarily) closed for new accounts when I migrated from 🐦 I’m happy that I then chose one of the small instances (troet.cafe). Haven’t had any problems there so far.
