I need to watch to be sure, but I probably wouldn't due to the butchering of Ye Wenjie's character. But I am so annoyed that a story that is told from a very Chinese perspective, with the nuance needed for China's turbulent past, has been subverted to make a political statement to fit the Western lens.
Too much to go into here, but this is why I do not trust adaptations of foreign IPs .. the need to dumb them down and Anglicize them for "general" consumption 🥴

@liztai I haven't watched it either. But... Hearing about it is really saddening. Because what really appealed to me when reading the three body problem was the sense of wonder at seeing the world through a very very different lense to what I know.

@oceaniceternity yes exactly. I may not agree with it but it is fascinating to watch it. I liked the Tencent version because of how subtly and nuanced it portrayed the Cultural Revolution - that it was both a horrifying and inspiring time, and Ye Wenjie's character being shaped by that time.

@liztai
Indeed. The epic series produced in China is much better... and free on Vumoo.to

@hobs just more nuanced; the Netflix version sounds like a toned down, gory, sexed up version 😬

@liztai That's why I've decided not to watch it. I may be western but I enjoyed the books as they have a different perspective to me.

@missmelanieh yea unfortunately they changed things that really mattered in the book. Ye Wenjie's character shouldn't be changed the way they did it
