So I rented an Airbnb at a gorgeous location by the sea but I want to bail out early. The location is perfect and there's even a supermarket downstairs, but the apartment is pretty horrid!

It's my fault, really, I didn't read the reviews carefully and only realised the problems too late. I hoped for the best, hoping it won't be that bad. But it was lol.
Like the reviews said, the security refused to let me in, and if not for a kind old gentleman, I would've been stuck outside for goodness knows how long.

The mattress has already sunk in to the point that I can feel the springs dig into my back, so I ended up sleeping in the extra bed in the hall, but the mattress was hard too. My fussy neck hated the pillows, the travel pillow I bought was too hard ... the list goes on. And then, the final straw. Yesterday, all electrical sockets in the kitchen stopped working. The owner (or whatever company doing this) at least responded and told me to access the fuse box. Ugh.

But the most annoying thing was that there's no proper writing desk in the apartment, and this was supposed to be a vacation where I read, wrote and just did a lot of walking to think.

It's all due to my carelessness really, I didn't read the reviews carefully and was in a rush. AirBnbs are always a mixed bag, which is why I've moved on to booking hotels these days because I didn't want to bother with the inconsistent quality. But I took a chance because I wanted a cheaper vacation. Regret lol

Anyway I'm thinking of checking out early from this dump although there are two more days left to my stay. I had looked forward to this holiday and I'm super annoyed I can't write my heart out, read and enjoy the scenery in comfort.

What do you think? Leave or just salvage the situation?

@liztai If you can afford to do so, I think you'll be happier if you leave.

(Had a similar situation last year where kiddo and I booked a hostel for a 3-night stay and it was awful. So we left as soon as possible after the first night, moved to a cheap but civilised hotel, and didn't regret the lost money for a second.)

@lookitmychicken life is short and time can't be bought back. While I can afford it, it will be a big dent lol. Thanks I most probably will do it lol

@liztai Bail if you can afford it. Life is too short. Can you report to Airbnb and get some money back?

@haagaausiumaai thought about that but am not sure. Will try but probably won't get any positive news from that haha

@liztai It's probably worth a try. Even if it doesn't work out, that'll give you some data about handling future issues with Airbnb.

@liztai don’t let a substandard accommodation ruin your holiday. You should however, speak up and let the host know you’re dissatisfied and give them a chance to make it right; perhaps they have another property or give a refund. If they aren’t responsive, then bail (if you can afford to) and leave a honest review to help the next traveler. I had a less than great place in London once but the host gave me a partial refund AND did what he could to address some of my gripes.

@ldamlanatra communicating with the host now and he seems taken aback by how bad it is. Judging from his number he's abroad. He has a housekeeper that is probably not doing his job lol. I don't know why people want to operate an Airbnb for income. It's a pain in the arse. Not passive income at all.

@liztai if he’s not willing to refund despite this, a middle of the road option would be to stay here, but find a nice little coffee shop or day workspace for writing. It’s an expense, but not as much as a hotel on top of the Airbnb I think?

@liztai In my experience, being an AirBnB host or a landlord works best if they're in close proximity and can either be hands-on or can supervise. I hope it all works out OK for you.

@ldamlanatra am in a hotel now so it worked out well for me. I consider the Airbnb a loss as he basically lied through his teeth throughout

@liztai AirBnb is definitely a hit or miss, though it's mostly a miss for me.

We left a unit around 15 minutes after checking in very late two weeks ago, as the unit is very dirty and disgusting with cockroaches here and there.

Asked for a refund with pictures and videos, but we haven't got it back. 😅
