Hello @hachyderm !
I'm moving here from #FLOSS social - I'm a long-time #Linux user (since 1998) and @fedora contributor, and recently became a @debian maintainer as well.
$dayjob is at #Meta which unfortunately causes additional friction with the old instance since #Threads launched; they pay me to contribute upstream and basically make Linux distros work better for us and for the community; can't complain there.
I'm a #Midwest #USA transplant - originally from #Indonesia
#introduction
thanks to @mendel for patiently answering all my questions about this instance!
@michelin why switch from floss.social?
@projjalm because unfortunately it blocks all Meta IP ranges, including the corporate network, meaning I can't use it as part of professional networking while at work without resorting to using, say, Tor (can't use VPN since I need that to access work sites)
@michelin Hiya there,
I need to write a word in my profile, concerning how I stand with meta/threads and the like but in essence, I'd rather not.
Thank you though for being honest. I really appreciate.
@globcoco I totally respect that some people don't like my employer, and that's perfectly understandable! Re: Threads, all of wait-and-see, limiting federation or defederating are valid choices too.
I have no issue with anyone except those who insist anyone working for Meta can't be ethical ... as for the old instance, it's mostly a practical matter - it's harder to use from work so why should I bear and grin it - as well as, ironically, feeling unwelcome in an inclusive server
@michelin
Inclusiveness is not about letting the door opened to everyone without care of how they will behave once in the premise. Boundaries are necessaries.
If someone make a mess in your home (which is actually what Meta is gonna do → I don't need to wait to see that bc it already misbehaved), would you not establish clear rules? Do you accept anyone who "threatens" you?
You seem a genuine guy.
I wish you a good weekend... and most of all, good luck.
@globcoco well, as I said... Meta being defederated is a reasonable decision. Blanket banning our IP ranges (including the corporate IP range, which is separate) does not really serve a purpose apart from making life difficult for individuals like me (sure, I appreciate that the admins might not take my word on which IP range is which).
@globcoco
Trust, once lost, is hard to regain, and I get that. That's why my overriding concern is that I can't easily post while at work, the inclusiveness jab is me not-so-seriously conveying how it feels for me personally, more than anything.
Anyway... same to you, have a good weekend! And thank you for being willing to listen.

@michelin Oh! Haha. With your name and you mentioning you were a transplant I was wondering if maybe you were Swedish.
@clacke haha! With my previous name I was often mistaken for (and sometimes profiled), so I played it safe when naturalizing
@michelin @hachyderm @fedora @debian welcome to the #fediverse Michel
