I recently helped the New York Times with blockchain analysis for this story on the Trump memecoin, where more than 800,000 wallets lost money: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/09/us/politics/trump-crypto-memecoin.html
@molly0xfff rug pull. So old. Not very wow.
@molly0xfff By this time next year, the only stable currency left in the world will probably be Canadian Tire money and Kohl's Cash.
@chuckthewriter @molly0xfff I guess you saw: "Civil War".
@molly0xfff How many rubes turn out to be state actors will be both fascinating and terrifying.
@molly0xfff I have people who don't know much about computers ask me about Bitcoin, and I don't always know what to tell them.
One point I try to emphasize with them is "If you forget your bank password, you can walk into a physical branch and the bank will let you access your money. And if your bank collapses, the Federal Government will make sure you get your money out of it, to the tune of $250,000. If you lose your Bitcoin password, or if someone tricks you into sending BTC somewhere and doesn't deliver, or if you're holding BTC in an exchange and the exchange goes rogue or collapses? Money's gone."
(... unfortunately, I have to modulate that bit about the FDIC insurance these days with "Of course, with Trump in charge, who the fuck really knows" so I can understand people wanting to shift their backstop assets out of the USD).
Can it be, just in case, that part of US citizens are simply empty-headed, strohdumm?
@molly0xfff is there any speculation as to why traders in China were able to hop on the meme coin within two minutes. Is that indicative of an insider trade or are the those traders just on the ball?
@molly0xfff Sorry, but they had it coming.
@molly0xfff Who had '[expletive deleted] grifts on crypto pump-and-dump scheme' on their 2025 bingo cards? Oh right, we all did.
@molly0xfff #donthecon worked crypto and others got burned
Anyone surprised? It was a con game from the start
@SaanichGuy @molly0xfff As surprised that someone walking in the rain got wet. It's to be expected with anything tied to Trump.
@molly0xfff What I'm most interested in, is how much money was intentionally funneled to him and his circle?
