@eastmad your OS's system font doesn't seem to support that character. I can't view it too on macOS Sonoma.

@phanpy I can see the image correctly on the web page linked to, from the same machine and browser (Mac and Chrome).

@eastmad if you're seeing it on the shkspr.mobi site, it uses a custom web font to render the stars.

@phanpy So as phanpy doesn't load the same custom font, this is inevitable?

@eastmad technically yes. This should be the same issue for other clients too.

@phanpy @eastmad Excuse the chipping in but Phanpy on macOS Chrome does render the half-star correctly. Even weirder, if you use Safari's web inspector on the element (under Phanpy), it also shows the half-star correctly. Some weird interaction between Phanpy and Safari seems to cause the missing character?

@zimpenfish @eastmad suspect it (the browser) fallbacks to another font installed on your system (the star looks different than the other stars).

Try load this page, and check which characters are missing w3.org/TR/xml-entity-names/02B
