My mom expressed a potential interest in the Fediverse, and I'm looking for instance suggestions!

She's a lactation consultant, and going back to school for public health. She's also interested in social justice and neurodiversity. I'm thinking probably a mid to medium large instance, and a general purpose one might be good to start, but any suggestions would be welcome.

@reillypascal

The single generic suggestion that I offer (and I never seem to see mentioned) is to pick an instance very close to her own timezone

That means the instance is likely to be most active when she is -- not something that's eight time zones away

@reillypascal
Anywhere with an active local, show her the importance of searching/following/pinning tags, using them when relevant, then if she finds a new home, help migrate.

@reillypascal +1 for beige.party, it's a fantastic group of people

@reillypascal

I enjoyed my time at mindly.social before migrating to dice.camp .

@reillypascal if you pick an instance based on interests or location (vs just 'big and reliable') make sure she knows how to look at both Local Timeline and Federated Timeline. Local will show what others on the server are saying and she may find follows; Federated will show what people on the server are following.

These are less useful on servers where the defining factor is just 'big'
