Jim Hacking (immigration attorney): in the first Trump administration, cases that used to take 3-6 months ballooned to 18-36 months. Straightforward cases like bringing spouses of U.S. citizens in to the U.S., grew to 2+ years. Biden and Blinken did nothing to improve the slowdowns that happened under Trump’s first term.
Slowdowns of legal immigration will happen even before they tinker with and change the law. It’s to slow down legal immigration
the UK just made it prohibitively expensive to bring spouses and dependents along.
and then the anxiety around the "hostile environment" for immigrants meant that lawyers were an absolute must adding even more to the bill.
Of course you could do it without one, and a friend did - she was without her passport for 18 months while they decided her permanent residency.
I paid 3x to get mine on the day with help from my lawyers.
Moved back to Canada 2 years ago.
@skinnylatte It is totally false that Biden and Blinken did nothing to speed up legal immigration. The number of refugees admitted into the country per year went up by something like two orders of magnitude, and the time required to admit refugees was slashed to a small fraction of what it had been.
Biden set aggressive targets for increasing refugee admissions and making them dramatically faster and hit those targets.
I literally work with the people who made this happen.
USA admits the least amount of refugees per capita and per square miles of territory. doesn’t even come close to Germany or even France. last i checked, the one country with the most refugees per capita and square miles happened to have been bombed with the blessing of Joe Biden. Lebanon is the refugee capitol of the world. last time i wrote about this, Lebanon and Jordan were home to the largest populations of stateless people in the world. Biden policies just plain suck.
@blogdiva @skinnylatte The amout of work don't during the Biden administration to increase refugee admissions was massive, and it was massively successful. The Trump administration admitted as close to zero refugees as it could get away with, and Biden had his work cut out for him reversing that. If Harris has been elected she would have continued that work, increasing annual admissions further. What do you hope to gain by refusing to acknowledge the massive improvement?
@jik @skinnylatte it was an improvement compared to TFG, yes, NOT TO WHERE NUMBERS SHOULD BE. this is the same issue with his loan program. not even 1% when he was the deciding vote, at the last minute, that sealed the fate of millions into indentured servitude. did you know Elizabeth Warren’s CFFB was supposed to have a SL component and he did everything to disembowel the agency? billionaires exploited COVID & Trump so they could get their guy, and stop Warren, their existential crisis.
@blogdiva @skinnylatte Yup, I totally agree that the U.S. should be admitting more refugees. And so does Biden. And so does Harris. That's why there were ambitious plans in motion to increase the number again next year, and the year after, etc.
So, again, what do you hope to gain by criticizing Biden for doing his best to do what you and I both agree he should have been doing?
That doesn't seem like a winning strategy to me, but you do you, I guess.
democrats like Biden are the enemy. don’t sugar coat his awfulness. make sure someone like him is never EVER given that kind of legitimacy and power. learn how neoliberal billionaires exploited the pandemic to get their guy to continue failing upwards. learn that you should treat white guys like him as your enemy, not just mine.
his fascism-lite is still fascism, not centrism. rebuke that and him and anybody who tries to whitewash his legacy.
that’s how you NEVER AGAIN.
@jik @skinnylatte To bring a wife takes 2 years, I know, it happened to a friend. That's still a family separation policy.
@skinnylatte I’m starting to see distinct differences between the viewpoints on immigration slowdowns for people talking about Trump policies or Biden’s as opposed to folks I know dealing with it personally and in their families. In fact, giant differences. Their fears are magnifying geometrically now.
