I came across a local crafter making merino beanies DYED WITH PURPLE SEA URCHINS (urchins are super invasive and we need to remove them asap from areas where there’s kelp for the rest of the animals and kelp) and of course I’m going to get one

You can get it at the Sealevel SF holiday bazaar Dec 14-22 or message Seelie Studio

Sometimes they (with some diving / marine partners) do an urchin party with DJ. You go there and you eat uni and then they take the shells and they turn that into purple dye for fabric.

@skinnylatte I very much regret that I never did any fishing while I lived in California, but also it had never occurred to me that sea urchin would be, like, a thing you could just, like, collect and eat

(In the same way that I’m still flabbergasted every time I remember that lemons and limes grow on trees there)

@skinnylatte in my defense I am from a place that is about as far from both the desert and the ocean as it is possible to be

@kevinriggle there’s a bunch of videos of people just going to the coast with soy sauce and rice. I can’t wait to try it myself

@djb @skinnylatte Well, to the question posed by that headline, I for one am here to try!

@skinnylatte Now that’s a delightful and delicious-sounding image. Something appealingly primal about it.

@skinnylatte ooh now I want to figure out how to dye with purple sea urchins

I've wanted to dye with something native to the bay area, but I have no room to grow plants to harvest them responsibly

@skinnylatte But this is so cool... 😲 Like modern Tyrian purple, but helping the environment! I'm going to check them out and see ink can be made from the dye... Thank you so much for sharing this!

@skinnylatte It's things like this that make sustainability and veganism hard to coincide. And why I will never forgive the Tumblr vegan community for being mad I said it's good actually to hunt invasive species.

@skinnylatte I believe you should sea urchins and not hear them
