Anyone seen this awful show Outlander? It spontaneously started playing on my ipad this morning., and was so rife with bodice-ripper clichés I couldn’t look away. All the checked boxes so far: hot Brit nurse protagonist, WW2, Scottish Highlands, kilts, bagpipes, crumbling castles, horses ridden very badly, hot wounded male lead lovingly tended by nurse protagonist, rape, Druids in diaphanous gowns dancing around standing stones, 18th century Scots equivalent of drunk ignorant rednecks. Like an AI wrote it.
@iBlame it’s awful but apparently straight women adore it. I couldn’t imagine going back in time to fall in love with someone who probably doesn’t shower
@skinnylatte Right? As a non-straight woman I am completely confused by this apparent sexy nostalgia for the good old days when we were basically chattel imprisoned in heteronormative castles.
@iBlame apparently all straight women want is to be with a medieval man with an accent
"Salah ad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub (c. 1137 – 4 March 1193), commonly known as Saladin, was the founder of the Ayyubid dynasty. Hailing from a Kurdish family, he was the first sultan of both Egypt and Syria."
@mrundkvist @iBlame ibn battuta is more my type
@skinnylatte @iBlame I know! So dreamy...
@skinnylatte @mrundkvist Proof that the Middle Ages weren’t— as is commonly alleged—a time of unbridled ignorance: this dude convinced everyone that travel writing was A Thing, and rode that wave all the way from Morocco to Beijing.
