Does anyone know #immich a bit? My brother is looking for an alternative for Google Photos (finally trying to get out of their web, it seems) and feels immich could be it.

I don't know it, hadn't even heard of it, so I can't tell him to switch (even though it can only be better than Google 😉)

I thought he was looking for a decent alternative, so I suggested #Nextcloud (of course I did), but that didn't seem to do it for him. Apparently he wants to be able to seach his albums by location, I'm not sure if there's an app for that in Nextcloud.

No experience re. #Immich (only read it's good).
However: #Nextcloud, particularly combined with the “Memories” app, has decent support for photos; working with location data included.
Nextcloud _only_ for photos might be overkill, though, as you get enough to replace most, if not all of Google. 😉

@lothar Nice! I didn't know the Memories app, although I've used Nextcloud since it was named ownCloud.

Looks nice, I should install that app and play with it a bit. I have quite some photos to which I added GPS coordinates (my "real" camera doesn't have a GPS receiver).

I use both with 2 different use cases:

memories to share photo of documents within the family
to backup photos from family devices to my own nas using @tailscale (1)

memories : I found memories more stable but less efficient and slower for auto-tagging and face recognition.
In immich you can change the Machine Learning model used.
