My understanding is that high kicks were never a part of Okinawan Karate and were actually incorporated from the French art of Savate. Makes me wonder how common high kicks were in older Chinese martial arts.

@CGLambdin I seem to remember reading that Northern Shaolin was characterised by acrobatics and aerial moves, including high kicks, whilst Southern Shaolin was characterised by compact stable footwork and hand techniques.
Supposedly this was environmental, open plains and dealing with cavalry in the north vs. swamps, forests and living on boats in the south.
