@thisismissem people when the next centralized social media is again bad at moderation: :surprised_pikachu:

@thisismissem a situation in which masto is even worse and only obscurity has kept the problem from exploding here.

People scorn the blue check, but actual identity verification has real value.

@Magess I'd argue that an fundamentally-flawed system is worse than no system at all.

Absolutely agreed that actual identity verification is a problem the fediverse (and social media in general) needs to solve. It's a Hard Problem, for sure, but it needs addressing.

@thisismissem

Does #bsky really has a problem?
Or is it a just a newer manifestion of an older problem?

@thisismissem oh lovely, another former regulation structure that doesn't scale up to the assumptions or millions of users BSKY found themselves with

...I feel like these issues could have been foreseeable

@thisismissem Is there a better solution than domain verification though? That’s also what Mastodon uses, and perhaps more transparent than old fashioned Twitter blue ticks.

This is a good example of an edge case that seems to need more human intervention though.

@jakecoppinger I find rel links more flexible and doesn't require a user buying a domain. Community websites just need to support them and let users set multiple of them. Then we can easily verify whichever we trust the most.

@trond Ah yes good point - useful that rel links don’t require root domain ownership.
