Dear LazyWeb: Setting up a new Mac, what's are some groovy new monospace fonts for terminals and IDEs?

OK, so ⬆️ was like throwing raw meat in the piranha pool. Probably should have mentioned that I’m already using Inconsolata whose author BTW is here: @raph

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I'll look at them but the bar is high.

I have installed 16 monospace fonts (all the free ones mentioned in this thread). Have taken a screenshot of the ls(1) man page in each. Thanks again. Wow!

If I don't squeeze a blog out I'll at least post an image gallery or something.

Winner so far is … um er. Some are just astonishingly neutral and I respect that, but I picked FF Tisa for my blog which shows I like a *bit* of personality.

Hmmmm…

@timbray Have been enjoying Berkeley Mono

@joseph I like to think I keep up on new monospace fonts but this one I hadn’t heard of. Thanks!

cc @samf

@woodwardjd @timbray This. There are 2.2GB of fonts available there including those with icons for VIM. It's comprehensive. :)

@timbray uh oh, its rabbit hole time Tim!

I currently use Dank Mono - philpl.gumroad.com/l/dank-mono
I also really love MonoLisa - monolisa.dev/

Definitely find a font that includes symbols/powerline support. I also love the script variants. Makes editing in vim a joy :)

GumroadDank Mono: The coding typeface for aesthetesA typeface designed for coding aesthetes with modern displays in mind. Delightful ligatures and an italic variant and bold style.The included character set includes latin uppercase and lowercase letters, all modifiers, and diacritics covering most European languages. Additionally it covers an exhaustive list of math symbols, the basic Greek glyphs, some terminal glyphs (e.g. unicode block symbols, shades, circles, arrows, and Powerline symbols)Ligatures for 26 different code character combinations are included.To date, the font is used by over 5,000 people, has been featured on ProductHunt, and has become well known in some communities since I started it as a hobbyist type design project in April 2018.Originally this font was sold directly on dank.sh, but as the font matured and stopped changing, it’s now considered finished and finalised.(Note: If you have purchased Dank Mono previously on dank.sh rather than Gumroad, please contact me personally at phil@dank.sh to retrieve an up-to-date version. E-mails are responded to in batches and I'll attempt to respond within 60 days.)EULA: dank.sh/eula

@timbray Fira Code and Jetbrains Mono are both good.

@timbray

My go-tos:

- Codelia
- Comic Code
- Plex Mono
- Menlo / DejaVu

@timbray been using MesloLGS NF Regular for like ever.

@lebel @timbray Seconded. It’s recommend by powerline10k which makes for a really awesome and functional terminal experience.

@timbray I’m a personal fan of SF Mono on the Mac. Outside that, I’m a big fan of Input Mono Narrow, from the Input family of fonts. Free (as in beer, sadly not as in freedom), and can be customized to taste. You can choose your preferred letterforms for commonly confused characters (1, i, l, etc.), line spacing, and so on.

@timbray I went with Fira Code with ligatures turned on in my most recent setup and I’m pretty happy with it. I think JetBrains Mono is very similar as well.

@timbray you made me go track this down again computecuter.com/ I found this kind of thing (and eg Victor Mono, Monolisa) hard to get to a readable size on a small screen, but I've got a bigger monitor now so maybe I'll try again? They do look great in code samples in presentations tho.

@frank @timbray +1 vote for Berkeley Mono. It’s beautiful.

@timbray actually I don’t know if it’s monospaced, but it is very nice.

@timbray I believe the Jetbrains UI refresh uses Inter by default. It's very pleasing from my current experience with it.

@timbray I installed Jetbrains mono a couple of weeks ago and then completely forgot I was using it, so it must be pretty good!

@timbray @raph
I use Inconsolata Light - I love the base font too but the Light weight is even nicer.

@timbray Fira Code for my IDE and terminal, SF Mono for anything else.

@timbray love Source Code Pro but also Menlo is the default on Mac and it's just super nice anyway.

@brandonscript @timbray I switched to SF Mono, but a modified version that has a bunch of ligatures in it, like where “->” is an actual arrow and “|>|” is a right-facing triangle.

@gren @timbray Same. Paid for it. And I don't regret it :)

@timbray Hasklig is really interesting for the ligatures, but I couldn’t live with the regular glyphs. I think I’m using Monaco or something equally uninspired.

@timbray ymmv but Menlo pre-installed on the Mac has always been my goto monospace font.
