"Hélène Jawhara Piñer understands that at first mention, a #cookbook about #matzah and flour might not grab the imagination. After all, she said, matzah has a long-held reputation as the “squared, crunchy, untasty” food we eat on #Passover.

But Piñer is an academic who has studied medieval #Jewish #food culture in #Spain and #France, and she accepted the challenge of winning over matzah skeptics by writing a #historical cookbook about it.

“Most people don’t know how matzah can be so exciting,” she said.

Life is hard. Some days are at the absolute limit of what we can manage. Some days are worse than that. Eating — picking a meal, making it, putting it into your facehole — can feel like an insurmountable challenge. We wrote this cookbook to share our coping strategies. It has recipes to make when you've worked a 16-hour day, when you can't stop crying and you don't know why, when you accidentally woke up an Eldritch abomination at the bottom of the ocean. But most of all, this cookbook exists to help Sad Bastards like us feel a little less alone at mealtimes.

If you're going up against a Norse god, you'll need a hearty meal. The official #GodOfWar #cookbook is here for you. twincitiesgeek.com/2025/01/coo

Twin Cities Geek - MN Geek Culture Magazine · Cook a Feast Fit for a God with the "God of War" Official CookbookAt first blush, a cookbook based on the God of War video games might seem like an odd choice. But in the most recent installment in the series, God of War: Ragnarök, there are actually a few scenes involving cooking or sharing meals, and there is an entire quest revolving around finding ingredients for a specific stat-boosting meal. So God of War: The Official Cookbook of the Nine Realms is really quite apropos!Written from the perspective of a character in the game, the book offers quite a spread of dishes. Although there's a significant Norse myth bent to the series, there are foods from many different regions included here—the authors have mapped different cuisines to the nine different realms spoken of in the mythos (Midgard, Svartalfheim, Muspelheim, etc). I tried five of the recipes to get a feel for things.Köttbullar These Swedish-style meatballs were absolutely delicious! I think the sauce in particular really makes them top-notch. It was creamy and flavorful, and with a blend of pork and lamb, the meatballs themselves were juicy and tender. While they do take some time to cook, I don't think they're very difficult. The only downside is that the leftovers didn't reheat very well. Whole Roasted Carrots I didn't feel particularly strongly about these one way or the other—they were okay. They are pretty easy in theory, but the honey curry glaze didn't stick to them very well, so I think they weren't as flavorful as I wanted them to be. Rødkål So, my family recipe for rotkohl (as it's called in German) is one of my favorite foods. I love red cabbage. You might even call me a connoisseur of red cabbage. This recipe is the saddest red cabbage I've ever had. Bland. Crunchy. You might as well eat it raw. As written, the recipe is very simple: cabbage, cherry juice, cider vinegar, sugar, salt, and pepper. After one taste, I had to take it back to the stove and fix it. I added a peeled and shredded apple, ½ teaspoon onion powder, ¼ teaspoon ground cloves, a bay leaf, and more cherry juice. I simmered it, covered, for another hour and a half, checking it frequently and adding more liquid whenever the previous liquid had cooked down. (½ cup of cherry juice at a time, or water, or apple cider vinegar—I just went with what my heart told me in the moment, but you can taste test to make sure the flavor is balanced.) Made properly, red cabbage is soft and flavorful. You're welcome. Sausage Rolls Fair warning: This recipe makes a lot. It says it's eight servings, but it was more than that for me. It tasted really good, though, so I wasn't very upset to have to eat it for pretty much a full week. Despite having a very long ingredient list, the rolls are very easy to make: Basically, you just mix together ground meats with a lot of spices and culinary aromatics, shape it into a meatloaf, wrap the loaf in pastry dough, and stick it in the oven. Simple, yet very flavorful! There's no suggestion for a sauce to along with it, though the photo in the book (below) shows a little dish of sauce served with the roll. Because of the similarity to meatloaf, I ate it with ketchup, which worked just fine. Hasselbackpoteter These were just Hasselback potatoes: potatoes sliced into accordions and baked with a bit of spices and butter. They weren't anything special, and I was a little "meh" about them. There are other ways of cooking potatoes that I like more.Despite the mixed results, I like the God of War cookbook as a whole. It has a lot of other recipes that I would love to try—aside from the 5 I tried for this review, I have another 16 tabbed, and they run a good spread from easy dishes to ones that involve more complex cooking techniques.A fair number of the dishes use spice mixes for which there are recipes at the front of the book, and I found these really good; they added a lot of good flavor to the dishes. The only downside to the spice mixes is that they call for the use of a spice grinder, which I do not have. I just used approximate equivalents of preground spices when needed. While not all of the recipes I tried were winners, the ones that were good were really good, and I am confident that I'll find more as I continue trying things. The food photography is quite good as well, with nicely staged shots that pull in imagery from the video games, and there are bits of sketched art peppered throughout the book. All in all, it's a well-put together cookbook that should appeal to foodie fans of God of War.God of War: The Official Cookbook of the Nine Realms is available now.
