Max<p>okay, so my official verdict is I'm not recommending <a href="https://im-in.space/tags/FrameworkLaptop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FrameworkLaptop</span></a> at this point in time.</p><p>it's cool, it's got fun features and stuff, but it's also the most unreliable piece of tech I've ever owned, and I've owned multiple sets of cheap bluetooth headphones.</p><p>in less than a year of me owning it, it had:</p><ul><li>ports randomly failing until reboot</li><li>CPU frequency randomly dropping to 1Ghz until reboot</li><li>liquid metal leaking and causing boot failures</li><li>keyboard keys getting stuck and/or out of place</li><li>random non-persistent boot failures where it just sits with a black screen for a couple of minutes</li><li>whatever the fuck is happening right now where it corrupted my FS and fails to boot even from a live USB</li></ul><p>I do want to believe (although I find it hard, with how they didn't even got around to replacing the faulty liquid-metal-thing in laptops they already sold) that <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@frameworkcomputer" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>frameworkcomputer</span></a></span> will focus on reliability and longevity instead of chasing the AI hype or whatever, but right now I very much can't recommend this.</p>
Trevor<p>I am planning on streaming the mainboard replacement for my <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/FrameworkLaptop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FrameworkLaptop</span></a>, but to do so I'll need a computer at the table where I'm going to do the work - can't do it at the desktop, the desk is (rightly) organized around my wife's work stuff. So - welcome back, cursed computer! The <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/Ubuntu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Ubuntu</span></a> <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/Surface" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Surface</span></a> Pro 3 returns, in all its glory. This is still a pretty nice device, despite its wear and tear from nearly a decade of service. Solidly built, nice action on the keyboard, beautiful screen. <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>linux</span></a> <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/microsoft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>microsoft</span></a> <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/framework" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>framework</span></a> <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/streaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>streaming</span></a></p>
Tommi 🤯<p>Since I am in Rome for a couple of days, I decided to come to work at the <strong>Library of the Senate of the Italian Republic</strong> this fine morning.</p><p>The library staff is not friendly at all, but the place is crazy.</p><p>I was asked what kind of laptop this is, and of course I proudly replied: “it’s a <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@frameworkcomputer" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>frameworkcomputer</span></a></span>, you should get one 😜”</p><p><a href="https://pan.rent/tags/Rome" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Rome</span></a> <a href="https://pan.rent/tags/Roma" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Roma</span></a> <a href="https://pan.rent/tags/Italy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Italy</span></a> <a href="https://pan.rent/tags/Italia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Italia</span></a> <a href="https://pan.rent/tags/SmartWorking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SmartWorking</span></a> <a href="https://pan.rent/tags/workplace" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workplace</span></a> <a href="https://pan.rent/tags/Framework" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Framework</span></a> <a href="https://pan.rent/tags/FrameworkLaptop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FrameworkLaptop</span></a> <a href="https://pan.rent/tags/FrameworkComputer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FrameworkComputer</span></a></p>
</p><p><a href="https://corneill.es/tags/framework" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>framework</span></a> <a href="https://corneill.es/tags/FrameworkLaptop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FrameworkLaptop</span></a> <a href="https://corneill.es/tags/Question" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Question</span></a></p>
Zygmunt Krynicki<p>I've just installed 96GB of RAM into my <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/FrameworkLaptop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FrameworkLaptop</span></a> 13 and I must say that this computer has exceeded my expectations. The memory was about $200 (USD) and it arrived from a local, third party reseller in one day.</p><p>I will not run AI models, so the 5600M memory is sufficient for me. The fact that this was an upgrade from 8GB is what counts.</p><p>Here comes all the VM memory I ever needed :)</p>
Mark Stosberg<p>Honest review for those considering buying a used <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/Framework" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Framework</span></a> laptop:</p><p>I don't recommend the original with the Intel 11th gen processor. There's been a battery drain problem, which seems possibly related to their swappable ports design. This lead to lower battery-life on a daily basis and a battery that eventually died what I would consider prematurely.</p><p>Now I have a daily problem with the USB ports dying until I reboot. Looks like I may need a new motherboard after 3.5 yrs.</p><p><a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/FrameworkLaptop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FrameworkLaptop</span></a></p>

scy<p>I wonder whether US companies recognize the amount of economical damage this administration is going to cause them in the coming years.</p><p>Like, would I still buy a <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/FrameworkLaptop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FrameworkLaptop</span></a> after today? I'm not sure. My gut says no.</p><p>And "move all your stuff off of US services" is rapidly making its way to the top of my to-do list.</p>
cliffle<p>Alright, so. Recently, about once a day, my <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/FrameworkLaptop" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>FrameworkLaptop</span></a> 16 has been doing ... this.</p><p>This results in the loss of all USB.</p><p>Which includes the internal keyboard, any external keyboards, any bluetooth keyboards... basically, everything except the trackpad, which is HID-over-I2C, and the power button, which is wired to the cros EC. I wind up having to hard-power-cycle the machine.</p><p>I&#39;m resisting the urge to throw this annoyingly bendy laptop out a window. Anybody got any ideas for how to debug this? <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@frameworkcomputer" class="u-url mention">@<span>frameworkcomputer</span></a></span> ?</p>
