Linguist Gone Foreign 🌏<p>I'm getting more and more irritated by the usage of "you guys" to address people - which is unfortunate, because I hear it a thousand times per day, </p><p>Whatever happened to:</p><p>"Y'all"<br>"You folks"<br>"You people"<br>"You peeps"<br>"You fellows" </p><p>?</p><p>I sense an illustrated article coming up. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Language" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Language</span></a> <br><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/InclusiveLanguage" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>InclusiveLanguage</span></a><br><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/LanguageMatters" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LanguageMatters</span></a></p>
Erik Nygren :verified:<p>Intuit has a great document on <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/InclusiveLanguage" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>InclusiveLanguage</span></a> that I hadn&#39;t seen before and which includes some terms where I was unaware of their racist roots:</p><p><a href="https://contentdesign.intuit.com/accessibility-and-inclusion/anti-racist-language/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">contentdesign.intuit.com/acces</span><span class="invisible">sibility-and-inclusion/anti-racist-language/</span></a></p><p>(Thanks to my wife <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://hachyderm.io/@Ksushis" class="u-url mention">@<span>Ksushis</span></a></span> for pointing me to it.)</p>
Erik Nygren :verified:<p>Has anyone considered the term &quot;native&quot; from an <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/InclusiveLanguage" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>InclusiveLanguage</span></a> perspective? I haven&#39;t found references to it in searches, but it has come up for discussion in one of our employee resource groups. I haven&#39;t found it in the list of terminology where alternatives are recommended, but it also does have dictionary definitions explicitly labelled as &quot;offensive/dated&quot; and some of the other definitions. (As a white dude, I&#39;ll refrain from expressing personal opinions and would rather listen.)</p>
