Big Sponsors at #TechConferences – Curse or Blessing? #FOSDEM

Recently, there has been a lot of discussion about large-scale sponsors at tech conferences. Some see it as a good thing, others not so much.

In my BOF session at @fosdem 2025, I’ll share my learnings from organizing the largest #NixCon ever—and how we managed to keep it completely sponsor-free.

I'm honored to host a BOF session at one of the largest free software conferences in existence, bringing together 8,000+ #hackers from around the world. 🤘

@vt52 a friend of mine implemented nix-fused more than 10 years ago (unfortunately as a corp-internal non-public project) which just pulled on demand whatever was needed to execute a random binary into the Nix store.

I believe there was a recent talk at #NixCon or so where someone reimplemented the same idea...

That's basically comma on steroids ☺️

@astro was just watching your #NixCon presentation on microvm for #NixOS. I was considering using it for my #homeassistant setup, but it sounds like it's meant to run NixOS guests -- does it work well with other images like HAOS?

Right now I've just added the HAOS VM container using virsh, and I connect to it using VirtManager from my laptop -- I like this approach, but would love to have a more declarative approach to managing my VMs -- I have an old Debian host running several VMs to upgrade

#NixCon'24 was great [EDIT: for me], glad it happened. Missed some faces of course, not unexpected. Missed some sleep but finally escaped c-base. East Berlin is lit! I could live on those kebabs and pastries forever. Ask for "turkish çay" at any corner and you get what you need, not the Twinings pissbrew. Best Birria in my life so far too.

After a uneventful trip home and a 12h sleep night, I am finally home and fully awake!

Thanks all for making this 2024 #nixcon extraordinary. It's been a really tiring but exciting adventure!

It was great to finally meet some of these online nicks AFK.

so one thing weird about #nixcon is how everyone on stage seems to be pretending that everything is totally fine while core figures are fighting each other behind the scenes in the forums. as a relatively inactive contributor I find it very hard to judge the merit of arguments and the impact this whole conflict has on the community's future.
