#ZimaBoard

1 post1 participant1 post today

A few months ago, I built a NAS using a Raspberry Pi 5 and liked it so much I even blogged about it. A few days ago, I stumbled upon a YouTube video featuring a beautifully designed 3D-printed case and a ZimaBoard-based NAS. I was very intrigued, looked over at my wife, and she just said, “No.”

Guess that’s that.
Here’s the video: youtu.be/NXIu-B52WPU?si=gX9q_9

youtu.be- YouTubeEnjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

With apologies to their fans, I have been totally underwhelmed with the experience of having bought a #zimaboard for self hosting.

It's my opinion and experience that computers which try to straddle the line between "maker" and "self hoster" audiences will disappoint both.

Today the Proxmox VM I use for my RSS reader died, and so did the Proxmox UI for no reason I can discern. Both ran on my Zimaboard with an SSD hanging off the side.

Might be time to spring for another $100-200 Beelink server and consign the Zimaboard to the deeps, or hand it off to someone who wants to futz with circuits rather than trying to run a reliable server :)

ZimaBoard 2 is a single-board server with Intel N150, dual SATA interfaces, and two 2.5 GbE LAN ports (crowdfunding)

The ZimaBoard 2 is a new single-board server that’s available for pre-order now through a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, the board is expected to begin shipping in August, 2025. It’s basically a pocket-sized PC with a low-power Intel processor plus a few extra features that set it apart from most other mini PCs.

For one thing, the ZimaBoard 2 has a PCIe 3.0 x4 connector on the side that […]

Four years after launching a single-board server with an Intel Apollo Lake processor, the makers of the ZimaBoard are preparing to introduce a new model. The company hasn’t provided detailed specifications yet, but the design, expansion slots, and processor have all been upgraded for the upcoming ZimaBoard 2.

Trying to decide if a 2-bay NAS is overkill (for me who does not know what she's doing anyway) and if a single board computer like the Zima board is enough for a start.
The latter is decidedly cheaper too.
You know, for a
start into the home server thing.

Any advice? This is your chance.
Just to be clear: I've been researching this for months, maybe even years by now. I have ideas about which NAS to get (
if I should go that route), and I am mentioning the Zima board deriberatley (instead of a Raspberry Pi). So I'm not a super clueless noob noob. But still unsure enough.

Edited to add that I am in the EU. Maybe that‘s useful info for those who might want to reply.

Thank you to everybody who‘s already replied. I‘ll get back to you later, when I have more headspace and time.

OPNSense on the Zimaboard works fine, stable and fast enough (I am not using intrusion detection). Very low temperatures at 4 watts.

One option I also configured because ISC DHCP is getting replaced by KEA.

Not all options and extra parameters are in (compared to the normal version) but It is OK for my purposes.

One annoying (but maybe obvious) thing I need to remind you off is that a double MAC address is detected when entering reserved leases but NOT double assigned IP addresses unfortunately.
Causing network downs once both hosts are online and get a IP address. In my case after some days while during setups. So ^%&^%&^%&^%^%
