Her mother lives in the bad neighborhood because it feels safer. Since her mother has no brother, Thorn has no uncle and was raised by servants. Fathers play no role in the Reluctance Series. Her mother is a grandmother's age, runs a business, and is strict about school and study; that's okay with Thorn because she loves both. What's not okay is her mother thinks boys are a distraction, but is too old to perfectly police a frequently appearing male nuisance. What makes it difficult, and it's because her mother insisted on living in the wrong neighborhood, is it's a daemon consorting with a day angel. Thorn Rose understands her mother's worry and their relationship is tense at times, but Thorn thinks that with Streak at her side they can navigate the prejudice they'll face (like a white girl with a black man in the 1960s) together. </p><p>[Author retains copyright (c)2025 R.S.]</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BoostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BoostingIsSharing</span></a></p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/gender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gender</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/mystery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mystery</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/thriller" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>thriller</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/romance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>romance</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sf" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sf</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sff" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sff</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sciencefiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sciencefiction</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writingcommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writingcommunity</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writersOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writers</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSdiscussion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSdiscussion</span></a> <br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSstory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSstory</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSReluctanceStory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSReluctanceStory</span></a></p>

Since a lot occurs inside buildings, less than you'd think. Part of how I pulled it off was on Earth people lived in arcologies, city buildings, so it contrasts well with Mars living in domes. I had to deal with Mars dust and helicopters, but I avoided details just like you don't care other than your 747 flies and arrives safely and the jetway attaches properly. I fudged a few things and I've had to revise to deal with orbits and stuff I didn't want to. It's the most looking up stuff while writing I've done in a while. I did no prior research, other than having archived an article on using fungus to build bricks on Mars. </p><p>[Author retains copyright (c)2025 R.S.]</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BoostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BoostingIsSharing</span></a></p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/gender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gender</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sf" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sf</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sff" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sff</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sciencefiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sciencefiction</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writingcommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writingcommunity</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writersOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writers</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSdiscussion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSdiscussion</span></a> <br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSstory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSstory</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSMarsNeededWomen" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSMarsNeededWomen</span></a></p>

I haven't stated the person who is being followed here, because that's the mystery and I really like this passage because it lays down her identity to the point where the reader ought be certain who she is. </p><p>This is spoilers for new material added to <em>Mars Needed Women</em> and is definitely FIRST DRAFT.</p><blockquote><p>With a map at the personnel entrance tapped into book plate guidance, she found it simple to scoot in a horizontal Superman float through the passageways via equally placed bronze handholds, and down the stairways to E4. She waved at men who nodded as she glided by, wary eyes following her. The old men, former Earthers now Rockers, eyed her with suspicion. The scars on her scalp and neck discouraged more lascivious glances she might have merited before, despite the light-duty enviro suit conforming well to her female form—and hiding further less than pretty disfigurement of her extremities.</p><p>The formerly all-male commercial vessel had been painted inside with scenes of Mars. The ones of the of the red dust stained polar cap rising to the ceiling being the most awesome, glacial, and least realistic. She would return later to examine the impressionist painting of Dingo Gap in the pointillist style of George Seurat. She'd visited the Gale Crater reserve a lifetime ago and had a special attachment for scenes of Martian robotic exploration a century before her birth. The surface that would become the floor during boost resembled regolith. All surfaces were sealed; the scuff marks and gouges were superficial.</p><p>She spotted yellow and black Hiroshima-pansy warning signs starting on E2, where cabinets, storage lockers, and nograv workrooms with hallways full of pretty wall art turned into machines and pipes. Doors on these levels could be dogged, unlike spring doors installed elsewhere. She shuddered. As a survivor of the Hiroshima-level event in Herschel Crater, she'd exceeded her radiation exposure for her foreseeable future. </p></blockquote><p>The photo is a Hiroshima-pansy. </p><p>[Author retains copyright (c)2025 R.S.]</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BoostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BoostingIsSharing</span></a></p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/gender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gender</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sf" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sf</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sff" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sff</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sciencefiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sciencefiction</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writingcommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writingcommunity</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writersOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writers</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSdiscussion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSdiscussion</span></a> <br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSstory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSstory</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSInklingsStory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSInklingsStory</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSMarsNeededWomen" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSMarsNeededWomen</span></a></p>

My two main recipes is to recognize bright colors on a dim background (which will render black in posts) or to recognize contrasting colors that will render a bright foreground (orange, purple, yellow, white) against a contrasting background (usually blue, brown, or green). Though it's a bit harder, I try to imagine the scene as bright against dark, as monochrome. This renders as either painterly (low contrast) or blown out (solarized). I do these things instinctively without having to raise the camera. Introduce them as they come on stage!</p></blockquote><p>Let's welcome our semi-classical ensemble for the evening. Please ignore what they are wearing, please! The first one entering stage left, with horns like a bull and with a complexion of a lawn… it's our favorite daemon Thorn Rose playing a flute, because that's her favorite instrument and it reminds her of Streak, who's dropping from the catwalk on wings of white and ruby, flapping languidly as he carries his brassy saxophone, which he says he plays like he does his girlfriend Thorn. Stage right are entering the Dancer triplets, two night angels and one day angel, because that happens. Cloud Dancer and Meadow Dancer greet the audience, waving their leathery wings. They are as black as midnight as are their jazzy <em>shades</em> that protect their night eyes against the bright lights. Cloud Dancer plays his fiddle, as if it were an emotional boyfriend that has a a lot to say, waving the violin and bow to cool them down as his boyfriend often needs be.That shows the blue spots between his wing fingers. Meadow Dancer's spots green, and she is rolling in her bass in a hard shell because, well, that's safer. Fire Dancer, ablaze with orange and red feathers, waves her viola from whence both sweet and cloying sounds emanate to mesmerize her audience. Bringing them together is Rainy Days, who plays that big black lacquered concert piano. If I describe her or her playing as anything but beautiful, I might not survive the night. Beautiful! MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History May 2, 1919: Soldiers of the Freikorps murdered Gustav Landauer, anarchist, pacifist, and Education Minister, in the short-lived Bavarian Workers Republic. The Freikorps were right wing veterans of World War I. Many went on to become Nazis. Landauer believed that social change could not be won solely through control of the state or economy, but required a revolution in interpersonal relations. "The community we long for and need, we will find only if we sever ourselves from individuated existence; thus we will at last find, in the innermost core or our hidden being, the most ancient and most universal community: the human race and the cosmos." Landauer’s grandson is the acclaimed film director, Mike Nichols (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, The Graduate, Catch-22, Carnal Knowledge, Silkwood). British writer Philip Kerr wrote the novel, “Prussian Blue,” in which Hitler is one of the Freikorps militants who murdered Landauer.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/anarchism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>anarchism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/pacifism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pacifism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/soviet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>soviet</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Revolution" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Revolution</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/gustavlandauer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gustavlandauer</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/fascism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fascism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/nazis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nazis</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/hitler" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hitler</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/film" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>film</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/novel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>novel</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstadon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstadon</span></a></span></p>

Most of the time, she avoids conflict altogether. And friends. A coworkers (being blackmailed to work for the mob tends to foster that attitude.) Forgiveness doesn't come into the picture much if you aren't around. </p><p>Now Bolt has a <em>real</em> friend who considers her a <em>real</em> friend, i. e., the devil-girl. When the main series antagonist tries to kill that new friend, Bolt goes nuclear. Let's say that it was likely little more than a air currents caused by a raging fire that was the difference between Rainy Days, the main series antagonist, getting getting grazed by a corner stone (still a serious injury) and having her head bashed in. The first such person in uncounted years that almost succeeded in killing the otherwise immortal thaumaturge. </p><p>Okay, one might argue there is no space for forgiveness here either, or to access whether she is or isn't forgiving type.</p><p>[Author retains copyright (c)2025 R.S.]</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BoostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BoostingIsSharing</span></a></p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/gender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gender</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/mystery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mystery</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/thriller" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>thriller</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/romance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>romance</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sf" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sf</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sff" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sff</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sciencefiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sciencefiction</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writingcommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writingcommunity</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writersOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writers</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSdiscussion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSdiscussion</span></a> <br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSstory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSstory</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSReluctanceStory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSReluctanceStory</span></a></p>
