A really interesting read, ranging widely across history, geography, geopolitics and environmentalism using the various places she visits (Chernobyl, Montserrat, Swona) as an anchor point.

Lovely writing and just enough detail, with an extensive bibliography at the back. Flyn tries to strike a balance between moments of hope and despair, concluding that there's still time for hope, but that while Life may find a way, it might not include us if we don't change.

“In the right-wing vision of America, every social interaction is an organ harvest, something vital snatched from the civic body, sold for one kind of profit or another. It’s a vision that produces an almost unmatched clarity in the base, and unmatched loyalty: *which side of this operation do you want to be on?*“ One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This by Omar El Akkad #books #literature #gaza #genocide #occupation #palestine

📘 "Strange Pictures" by Uketsu, translated from Japanese into English by Jim Rion

Me in the daytime: This is not scary at all.

Me at night under the blankets with my ereader: ...what if I tap next page and I get jumpscared by a sudden drawing? ._.

This was a fun, quick snack read. In all honesty, I think the ending was a little disappointing and the solutions for the mysteries were a little ridiculous and I'm not even going to start about all of the pseudoscience. It's not the point of this novel.

The book did entertain me for two days while I sped through the pages at the speed of a pet hearing the distant rustling of a treat bag. They're short stories full of different text sources, images and clues, leading to a chapter at the end that wraps everything up neatly.

Reading this feels like munching on good popcorn. I'm looking forward to the next Uketsu translation that's coming out later this year!

#WritersCoffeeClub 29/3: How do you handle foreshadowing? How do you navigate building up to the ‘big reveal’?
Being the kind of writer I am, it often isn’t consciously planned. But planned or serendipitous, it’s important not to overdo it. It’s the obverse of Chekhov’s Gun: yes, there’s a gun on the wall, but don’t have a character in the first scene going, 'Gosh, I say, chaps, is that a GUN on the wall?'
