#clavier #corne #crkbd

  • i have no idea where to put backspace and enter. they're both useful enough to not want on a layer but not useful enough to get one of my very limited thumb keys. and there's no room on the alphas. i could do mod tap i suppose
  • i don't know how to do numbers. i wanna do a numpad style layout but that would need a thumb key for zero, but that would need a free thumb key, but that would mean i would need to have it on either my nav layer or my symbol layer. which isn't ideal because i want those for y'know, nav and symbols. maybe a layer toggle is better here, for a sort of "equation mode". side note: i think that's the first time i've typed a Q

corne keyboard layout first impressions:

  • my hands rest much more comfortably on the center thumb keys than the default inner ones so i remapped it
  • trying to avoid using the outer (further under the hand) thumb keys because that's where i've had pain before. but it's so tempting because it's so useful
  • i have tiny, weak pinkies so i'm not using the sixth (outer) column
  • coming up with good key mappings is a fuck
  • i don't touch type so a lot of keys feel like they're very weird positions to me:
    • i keep reaching way too far for B
    • i strongly expect C to be under the index finger, whereas other keys were an easier adjustment
    • M and N are very confusing
    • basically all my problems are with the index fingers
    • it really fucks with me that the index finger gets two columns unlike every other finger. feels like i'm fucking up by using the wrong finger but no

Spent the last 3 days building a CRKBD Corne split keyboard! The first day was just spent soldering all the components together. To no surprise, not a single component worked on the first try. But since 5 hours had been spent, I decided to solve the issues the next day, redoing most of the joins until every single component worked. Today was just tweaking the layout, flashing the MCU and actually assembling the keyboard. The entirety of the keyboard cost about 46€ in parts from Taobao. The soldering kit cost 15€ from Aliexpress.
