Heather Kavanagh<p>This has been occupying me, when I’m not sorting out stupid pooter things.</p><p>It’s a 1/72nd scale Avro Manchester, the precursor design to the more famous Lancaster bomber. It’s a conversion kit for a standard Lancaster kit, and it’s been lurking around the bench since 2023. I’m now in the final paint and detail stage. It should be finished early in the new year.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ModelMaker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ModelMaker</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ModelAirplane" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ModelAirplane</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/1940obsession" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>1940obsession</span></a></p>
Heather Kavanagh<p>I had a fairly good weekend. I made some significant progress on one of my long-winded 1940 obsession builds.</p><p>Using a resin cast kit, I’ve been converting a bog-standard Airfix Avro Lancaster into a Manchester. It’s been a slog, started over a year ago, and it’s stuffed full of compromises, but it’s finally looking like a Manchester. There’s still a way to go, but it should be done fairly soon.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/Modelmaker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Modelmaker</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ScaleModels" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScaleModels</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/Hobbies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Hobbies</span></a></p>
Heather Kavanagh<p>I’ve finally got round to refurbishing my photo "plank". I made it some years ago, from 5mm foamboard, various paints and flock scatter material. I use it to pose model aircraft to have their photos taken on a sort of grass airfield-ey kind of thing.</p><p>The board warped, because I was stupid and didn’t think the paint would dry and contract. Anyway, I’ve now forced it flat on a rudimentary strip wood frame. It won’t last, but I have plans for a new version.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ModelMaker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ModelMaker</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ScaleModels" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScaleModels</span></a></p>
fuzzyface<p>I consider it very much a win when you order a desk set to help you organise stuff when building and painting models and they give you a free model to build as part of the deal. <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/modelmaker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>modelmaker</span></a></p>

Heather Kavanagh<p>Here’s what I’ve been up to recently, between looking after a slightly poorly hubby.</p><p>I really need to concentrate on my commission work. The 16 Great Eastern Railway coaches are progressing slowly, but I keep getting sidetracked by plastic aeroplane kits. I’ll perhaps go into more depth about that personal hobby project one day.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ModelMaker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ModelMaker</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ModelRailways" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ModelRailways</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ProfessionalModelmaker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ProfessionalModelmaker</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ModelAircraft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ModelAircraft</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/RoyalAirForce" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RoyalAirForce</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/SecondWorldWar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SecondWorldWar</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/WorldWar2" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WorldWar2</span></a></p>
Russ Haines<p>So many bloody wheels... <br>Pegging the sides of the QM trailer together to make sure they're structurally sound.</p><p><a href="https://c.im/tags/airfix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>airfix</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/ModelMaking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ModelMaking</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/ModelMaker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ModelMaker</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/ScaleModels" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScaleModels</span></a></p>
Heather Kavanagh<p>The longest journey begins with the first step. </p><p>Annoying coach handrails. I’ve got to make dozens, reliably. At first, I thought some form of jig would be useful. In the end, I found simply forming the wire with fine pliers simplest. There is a wastage rate, but it will come down twitch more practice - I hope.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ModelMaker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ModelMaker</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ProfessionalModelMaker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ProfessionalModelMaker</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ScaleModels" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScaleModels</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ModelRailways" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ModelRailways</span></a></p>
Heather Kavanagh<p>Scoring meant the sheet of parts would stay together, and I could "snap" parts out of it as required.</p><p>After a bit of trial and error, I found the setting I needed. While I was cutting, I also created a shape to add strength to the coach kit roofs. </p><p>I need to use the kit more often. It takes me a while to reacquaint myself with the software and what capabilities the hardware has. Still, happy with the end results, and a fair bit of hard repetitive work avoided.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ModelMaker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ModelMaker</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ModelRailways" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ModelRailways</span></a></p>

Heather Kavanagh<p>I’m spending my afternoon with a very small biplane.</p><p>It will, when it’s finished, be an Avro Tutor, which was a pre-Second World War RAF trainer aircraft.</p><p>Getting those wings and struts on is trying my patience, I have to admit. It’s when one strut doesn’t meet its location point that frustration mounts.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/Modelmaker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Modelmaker</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/OnlySmaller" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OnlySmaller</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ScaleModel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScaleModel</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/HandMade" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HandMade</span></a></p>
Heather Kavanagh<p>Well, this is about as far as I can go with this. Like so many projects I do, it doesn’t quite come up to the finished standard I hoped for. Still, I know how to make another one, and that will be even better.</p><p>Sorry the photos aren’t better. I’m not setting up the full photo rig for this at present. Throwing unwanted shadows at the backdrop will need some creative lighting to solve.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/Modelmaker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Modelmaker</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/OnlySmaller" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OnlySmaller</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ScaleModel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScaleModel</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/HandMade" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HandMade</span></a></p>
Heather Kavanagh<p>The sliding doors have to go somewhere. On the real thing they run out onto parallel tracks, on outriggers to either side of the hangar. These are relatively simple polystyrene constructions, with sections from Evergreen and the angle truss from Plastruct. They need to be painted, but that’s a job for tomorrow.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/Modelmaker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Modelmaker</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/OnlySmaller" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OnlySmaller</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ScaleModel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScaleModel</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/HandMade" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HandMade</span></a></p>
Heather Kavanagh<p>Getting there. The basic carcass is together. I need to find a better paper glue because the printed sheets tend to lift along edges. Another time. Next, working out the door runners and the protective curtain sheets. I’ll also ponder if I need to add a roof.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/Modelmaker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Modelmaker</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/OnlySmaller" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OnlySmaller</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ScaleModel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScaleModel</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/HandMade" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HandMade</span></a></p>
Heather Kavanagh<p>The makings of a hangar. It’s nominally to 1/72nd scale. The camouflaged parts were designed in Affinity Designer. There’s a cross-brace setup and corrugations as a sort of trompe l'oeil effect to appear to have some depth. Side walls to stand the fascia away from a backdrop.</p><p>To find out more, look up Bellman Hangar in your favourite search engine.</p><p>More later, I hope.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/Modelmaker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Modelmaker</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/OnlySmaller" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OnlySmaller</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ScaleModel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScaleModel</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/HandMade" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HandMade</span></a></p>
Heather Kavanagh<p>Remember all those model railway coaches I’m building? Well, I’ve finally started to assemble the bodies. I made a simple jig from scrap wood to hold an end and a side while I joined them with solder. It mostly worked as designed. Three down, 13 to go. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ModelMaker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ModelMaker</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ProfessionalModelmaker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ProfessionalModelmaker</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ModelRailway" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ModelRailway</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ModelRailroad" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ModelRailroad</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ScaleModel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScaleModel</span></a></p>
Heather Kavanagh<p>Turns out I wasn’t in the mood for work today. I rebuilt one of my model aircraft photo bases instead. It was in my head and I needed to get it out. Essentially, it’s a simple sheet of foamboard with "concrete" panels to represent an airfield parking area or apron in front of a hangar (that’s a separate project). Adequate for most photo sessions anyway.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ScaleModel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScaleModel</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/modelmaker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>modelmaker</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ModelAircraft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ModelAircraft</span></a></p>

Heather Kavanagh<p>It was suggested, so here we are - some work in progress images of a current commission of 16 1/76th scale Great Eastern Railway coaches. They are all etched brass kits, requiring a great deal of forming and soldering. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/modelmaker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>modelmaker</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ProModelmaker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ProModelmaker</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ScaleModel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScaleModel</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ModelRailway" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ModelRailway</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/ModelRailroad" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ModelRailroad</span></a></p>
Maritimes Museum Hamburg<p>Heinz Peter Weiß was an outstanding <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/modelmaker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>modelmaker</span></a>. He specialized in scratch building waterline models of <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/ships" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ships</span></a> in a scale of 1:1250 out of cardboard. There is a section dedicated to his works on deck 9 of the museum. We have recently added a few more of his pieces, including a few of his incredibly elegant and extremely detailed <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/sailing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sailing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/yachts" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>yachts</span></a>.
