I'm considering using a password manager. I run a minimal archlinux-based system. I don't care about synchronizing with any other machines, just about making an encrypted backup of the password bank in a file I can put in an exterman HD and not worry about. Any suggestions?
Even more importantly, what to look for and what to avoid when evaluating alternatives? (My scepticism against software is what kept me away from this type of program for the last decade and a half...)
Passbolt v5 is almost here, refining your workflow, one dialog at a time.

https://discuss.privacyguides.net/t/keepassxc-yubikey-how-to-set-up-a-local-only-password-manager/25906 This article is a tutorial to install the password manager KeePassXC to work with a YubiKey.
This setup is very convenient if you wish to store your passwords locally only.
And it’s quite easy to set up!

While its entry-level security suite is a bit thin on features, F-Secure Total adds VPN, password management, and identity protection, with competitive pricing for multi-device subscriptions.

It’s good to do some digital decluttering. You will be surprised by how many unused applications or passwords you have on your phone or in your password manager.
Bitwarden or 1Password? Which one is better in your opinion?
I'm using Bitwarden for a few years now, and I can't complain, but it's an American company, and I want to ditch as many American services I'm using as possible. And now I got a free family account for 1Password, and I'm considering a switch. Would you recommend that?

If you want to keep your password manager local-only, KeePassXC is a great solution!
It's free,
Open-source,
Easy to install and use,
Doesn't require an account,
Works on Linux, macOS, and Windows,
And the team is here! @keepassxc
Here's how to set it up with a YubiKey: https://www.privacyguides.org/articles/2025/03/18/installing-keepassxc-and-yubikey/
I have successfully migrated to Proton Pass.
A reminder to all our friends who set up a password manager at the Digital Lounge: if you used a secure passphrase you memorised, now is a good time to practice typing it in, and make sure it's still fresh in your memory!
I should just start developing my own #passwordmanager with a custom really difficult to break encryption algo.

I‘m actually considering going back to @1password …
I need something which
- works seamlessly across devices and operating systems
- can hold more secrets than just username and passwords
- supports sharing with family
- will still work for my family without me, in case something happens
- looks trustworthy to me
I like #Strongbox but a bit worried about about this https://www.reddit.com/r/strongbox/comments/1jaljzn/strongbox_was_taken_over_by_the_company_applause/
While I don't known too much about Applause, Reddit is not pleased at all. And generally if someone pays money (hopefully a lot because Strongbox is nice) they expect to earn it back with interest.
Maybe they do it by making strongbox better and growing the user base, but usually it's too temping to milk the existing userbase.
I might give ProtonPass a try, or go back to Secrets, unless I remember why I switched away :-) or there is always Apple Passwords. Having it half enabled (for passkeys) is quite annoying so maybe I'll see how bad the new apps are. They seem to have family sharing nowadays.
Anyone have other suggestions for good native #passwordmanager ?
Still toying with European password managers. Both Proton Pass and Padloc are great options.
While cleaning up my mailbox I found @1password notification e-mails from 2017. I love trying out new apps and switching to new habits in order to optimize my workflow, but 1PW has been my only password manager for a while now. And as much as I love opensource software, nothing beats 1PW user experience so far imo.
Which #passwordmanager do you use ?
