#lostbones #FossilFriday Back in Northfield, Minnesota today and excited to work with the Science Museum of Minnesota for some photogrammetry of the mastodon tooth found in 1918 by Leslie Shaw!
Fun fact: The museum is the First National Bank building, famously tied to the James-Younger gang's attempted robbery in September 1876 and holds the ear of one of the robbers!

#lostbones for #FossilFriday! This partial mastodon pelvis was recently donated to the Brown County Historical Society in New Ulm, MN. It was found in 1987 in a gravel pit within the city limits. New Ulm borders the western bank of the glacial River Warren’s river valley, which now contains the Minnesota River.

This mammoth molar from Goodhue County was found in Hay Creek, a small trout stream that empties into the Mississippi River just to the north of Red Wing, #Minnesota.
It is on display, along with several other #Pleistocene proboscidean specimens, at the Goodhue County Historical Society.
It’s a #lostbones #FossilFriday! This remarkable mammoth
has an even more remarkable story! Housed at the Interstate Park Ice Age Interpretive Center in Taylors Falls, WI - the tooth originated in #Minnesota.
It was discovered in 1987 by a heavy equipment operator excavating gravel from a Gray Cloud Island gravel deposit ~125 feet below the original surface!

Its #MammothMonday Jim van Dijk has spent the last few months building the world's first reconstruction of a southern mammoth for the Museum Historyland Hellevoetsluis in Hellevoetsluis, Netherlands.
Not only is the sculpture just an awesome site but Dick “Sir Mammoth” Mol was a consultant on the project.

#Testosterone in tusks: #Hormones in #mammoth #fossils excite #paleontologists
There’s a lot we can correlate #hormone levels with, because #proboscidean tusks record the life of that animal. Its rings record days and years of growth, for example, seasons in which it experienced famine or abundance, from when it was born to when it died. So if further information, such as additional hormones, can be detected, this opens up a new window into the lives of #extinct #species

It’s #Minnesota #MammothMonday The beautiful mammoth molar below was dredged from a gravel pit near Carver Minnesota.
The tooth is an upper left molar of a Woolly Mammoth ~11-12,000 years old and is on display at the Carver County Historical Society. Over the same summer in 2001, a second molar and a tusk fragment were also recovered at the same site.

Happy #MastodonMonday! Here is an interesting article on the discovery of Nova Scotia's first recorded mastodon. The location, a cut bank along the bed of Cape Breton’s winding Middle River, makes a beautiful scene - a glacial geologist’s dream.

It's #Minnesota #MammothMonday. More Southern Minnesota proboscideans! - see my previous #MammothMonday posts. Here's a partial tooth found in 2019 by a friend. It was stuck in the muddy river bottom along a cut bank. Surprisingly not fully tumbled apart - the rest of the animal could be close! Donated to the #sciencemuseumofmn.

It's #Minnesota #MammothMonday. More Southern Minnesota mammoths! - see my previous #MammothMonday posts. Here's a fragment of a tusk found in 2019 on a river gravel bar. It is the "outer bark" - not dentine or ivory but cementum. Now, where is the rest of the animal!?

I am a leftist late(ish)-career #academic at #UNBSJ, a small east-coast #Canadian campus in Menahkwesk (Saint John NB). I teach courses in #c18 #literature, #bookhistory, #earlymodern #womenswriting, and #SFF. Current research: #copybooks. Not too active on Twitter since our strike but now it has become impossible because of a visceral gagging reflex whenever I envision Elon Musk. Let's see where this #proboscidean takes us. Or where we can take it.
Just moved over from @Mastodon.social. I am a leftist late-career #academic at #UNBSJ, a small east-coast #Canadian campus in Menahkwesk (Saint John NB). I teach courses in #eighteenthcentury #literature, #bookhistory, #earlymodern #womenswriting, and #SFF. I was never very active on Twitter but now it has become really difficult because of a visceral gagging reflex whenever I see pictures of Elon Musk. Looking forward to seeing where this #proboscidean takes us. Or where we can take it.
