‘I Am a Part of #Infinity’ and ‘Free Creations of the Human Mind’: Einstein’s Sense of Awe

Einstein wished to found a “cosmic religion” whose “mandate and meaning” was to remind us “that we embodied Infinity.”

He did not believe in a personal #God with influence over human affairs, or in a soul distinct from one’s body.

#Religion, he wrote, began with fear, then acquired a moral dimension.

“But there is a third stage of religious experience,” #Einstein wrote. “I shall call it cosmic religious feeling.” He described it as the desire “to experience the #universe as a single significant whole.”

Every day for 10 days I’m gonna share something that brings me joy.

Why? To remind myself why it’s worth fighting fascism. And I hope that it brings a little delight to your timeline as well.

Day 4:
Being able to enjoy the #beauty of the #universe, our ever-increasing #knowledge about it, and the #brilliance with which people have figured out an amazing amount of detail from tiny slivers of #evidence, e.g. the last scattering.

Nobels for a Strange #Universe

Recent data from supernova observations suggest most universe energy is not in stars but in space itself, implying a large cosmological constant. This concept of dark energy, once controversial, has gained credibility over 13 years, leading to a Nobel Prize for the team leaders. The featured image shows a 1994 supernova captured by these researchers.

At long last, a unified theory combining #gravity with the other fundamental forces—electromagnetism and the strong and weak nuclear forces—is within reach.

Bringing gravity into the fold has been the goal of generations of physicists, who have struggled to reconcile the incompatibility of two cornerstones of modern physics: #quantum field theory and Einstein’s theory of gravity.

Researchers at Aalto University have developed a new quantum theory of gravity which describes gravity in a way that’s compatible with the Standard Model of particle physics, opening the door to an improved understanding of how the #universe began.
