The decision to federate with Threads and welcome Meta into the fediverse is aging extremely badly. Now would be a good time for admins of currently federating instances to reconsider. At the very least, a reminder that in two weeks the federating Threads "potus" account will belong to the world's most powerful fascist.
For everyone else, here's a guide on how to block Threads: https://privacy.thenexus.today/how-to-block-threads-on-mastodon/
And if there are still any doubts on who is really behind that bridge, check out the mind-boggling inventory of Meta's crimes against humanity at the Free Fediverse wiki: https://freefediverse.org/index.php/Nightmares
@ophiocephalic I've yet to have anyone explain to me what harm I will come under by being allowed to decide if I see #Threads from my account or not. Why must an admin make that choice for me? Explain it to me like I'm 5 why you're treating me like I'm 5.
It's not about you, it's about the vulnerable minorities who suffer when hate is allowed to spread.
This post gives an example of how it works:
@FediThing @ophiocephalic but it is about me because it's my feed and if my grandma is on Threads you're taking away my ability to interact with her based on the actions of neither of us. Defederating from Threads isn't going to stop hate, but it will stop me from telling Nana happy birthday.
@Beeks @ophiocephalic I'm sorry but that doesn't sound at all plausible. Threads has only been federating in two directions for a few months, are you claiming you had no way of keeping in touch with your grandmother before a few months ago?
We're talking real world hate and genocide here, it's a bit more serious than ridiculous hypothetical examples.
@FediThing
Yess...I've always been concerned about moderation and how many admins finally have to "carry" that for "foreign" users....
@Beeks@hachyderm.io @ophiocephalic@kolektiva.social
You(impersonal) choose the instance based on its policies, which are set by the admin. As a user you can only hide content you dont like.
If you really want Facebook content in your feeds look into the instances whose admins met and signed an NDA with Facebook, they will probably view interaction as desirable.
@Theriac @ophiocephalic yeah, adding more friction to joining Mastodon is definitely the way to go.
@Beeks@hachyderm.io @ophiocephalic@kolektiva.social
ikr - facebook's one-way bridge really sucks. Mind you they do set up ghost accounts based on the userdata they glean from interactions, so there's that.
At least they don't have to go through all the hassle of setting up fake VPN companies to get at the data.
@Theriac @ophiocephalic If blocking someone or something is a social good then explain it to me and let me choose. Forcing it on me just makes me angry and kills any trust I have in the individual doing it.
@Beeks
Have you ever taken a look at the previously blocked, defederated instances of your "provider"? Admins & mod teams are already working on sparing us users the abyss of poorly moderated or unmoderated instances - from this point of view, it's nothing new and represents one of the centrepieces of our network...
@Regez @Theriac @ophiocephalic yup, and 100% of it is illegal stuff or extremely hateful instances with like dozens of people. It has zero negative impact on me or honestly anyone since people who want that stuff are already on those instances. It is not the same as blocking a hundred million people, most of whom are just random good people.
@Beeks@hachyderm.io @Regez@troet.cafe @ophiocephalic@kolektiva.social
Decent of you to take a stance - but you should perhaps read your own post
100% of it is illegal stuff or extremely hateful instances with like dozens of people.And change "hateful instances" to "data miners and bot farms". Giving bystanders lung cancer through passive smoking isn't the intent of tobacco smokers, but their choices impact others in ways beyond their ken.
@Beeks
You cannot equate the moderation effort of a centralised walled garden on capital-controlled management with many decentralised, voluntary moderators - this is not simply an oversized "instance", it is a business model that has only ever fulfilled its responsibility proportionately under regulatory pressure...just because something can be bridged technically does not mean that they are related structures that share the same focus...
@Theriac @ophiocephalic
@Beeks
And we are not yet talking about the possibility that Meta could also block, decouple, if we are no longer a lucrative customer, inter-operable conditions would then only be a welcome intermediate point that is converted...
If you want to be on the safe side, you should ensure other communication channels with your grandmother (which has also been demonstrated once again by the arbitrariness of the past few days)....
@Regez@troet.cafe @Beeks@hachyderm.io @ophiocephalic@kolektiva.social
we are not yet talking about the possibility that Meta could also block, decouple, if we are no longer a lucrative customer, inter-operable conditionsLike we have to make them feel at home you mean? This is the same C-suite that thought Cambridge Analytica was a good idea. I really do hope they feel unwelcome and leave before they break something valuable or pull a knife on someone.
