I don’t know who keeps perpetuating the myth that people abroad love Trader Joe’s snacks. I think I might get smacked if I gave them to people as gifts

Here, have some off brand / house brand versions of American junk food. It doesn’t taste very good. I’d rather have the actual junk food

The ‘international’ snacks that Trader Joe’s sells are so condescending. I like this thing called Curly Curls or something, and the back of the packet literally says ‘bet you never had lentils as snacks!!’ Well lots of people have had lentils as snacks

@skinnylatte I truly cannot get my head around their business

@SnoopJ healthy looking junk food for people who are above junk food; English translations for people who are too scared of / too far from any ‘ethnic’ grocer

I get why they’re popular but they really infuriate me sometimes

@skinnylatte yea it's like "what if a grocery store only sold overrated snacks and didn't threaten to broaden my horizons"

@skinnylatte I felt so bad for the interns we had visiting us this year when someone told them (pretty truthfully) that Trader Joes was the best grocer close to the office because like… damn, that sucks!!

@SnoopJ@hachyderm.io @skinnylatte@hachyderm.io there was definitely a period where my local trader Joe’s was less expensive for certain things compared to other grocery stores in the area (basic stuff like produce, maybe cheese, etc). I have no idea if that’s still the case anywhere, much less where I was.

I always kind of side eyed the “international” foods they sell (not least of which because the names they used seemed offensive). But then hearing about how they’ve strung people along as suppliers for new products only to turn around and sell their own version… well, that is a choice.

I don’t think I’ve ever had cheaper frozen cherries though.

@SnoopJ @skinnylatte I remember being so excited to discover the local Trader Joe’s, but that was more a statement on how bad the local grocery store options were at the time (the MIT side of Cambridge, early 2000s).

After a couple years of having it as my main grocery store… it got old real fast.

@SnoopJ @skinnylatte meanwhile, my brother worked for a Trader Joe's in Minneapolis and he said his favorite part was working the sample bar and watching Minnesotans try mild salsa: "uff da, that's got a bit of a kick to it, don'tcha know!"

So I guess it's broadening some people's horizons...

@dan living on the other side of the river has its downsides, but having easy access to both a Star Market and a Stop & Shop is definitely not one of them!

The office is reasonably close to a Roche Bros. too, but I can't really decide if that would be much better.
