With Ubers impending doom, it occurs to me there may be an interesting model to replace it with something that actually works in the cities where taxis work.

Basically a way for taxi companies to host their own routing/scheduling platform while allowing users to request a ride in a single app and choose from among the rides offered by the cab companies in response.

A *Federated* protocol for ride hailing.

If you want a topical rant by your driver you can federate with specific company instances :-)

I see a booming business of grad student's pursuing PhD's, providing interesting rides.

@adamhill @mgaruccio While I like the idea, there might be challenges in adoption across regions. I think a foundation or other non-commercial organization would be necessary to evangelize (and provide support for) any such protocol, or at least encourage use of open protocols that might be interoperable with each other.

Otherwise, established players would simply buy up the market, and close ranks.

@LikesCalendars @adamhill on some level established players, in the form of legacy taxi companies, are probably preferable for a ride hailing service. But yea the goal would be to have a bunch of local instances of the app, but all federated so when you travel to a diff city you can use your same app/account to hail a ride.

I think there’s probably room for a company here following the model of building OSS software and then selling the hosting/operation of that software.
