I have a problem that is caused by one of two issues..
1. Storage costs are high
2. My need to have tons of data is high
Which one should I be more annoyed at?
@axelrafn Storage costs being high is no doubt the more annoying problem of the two.
@axelrafn I've been using Hetzner storage boxes as my main backup. 40Euro for 20Tb/month https://www.hetzner.com/storage/storage-box/
@scottgal They are wonderful, I have two boxes with them and two physical servers as well. I am more thinking about physical disks for my homelab though.
@axelrafn Ah yeah those are NUTS. I'vebeen pricing out a new NAS and the disks are just CRAZY expensive.
@scottgal yup, I made a #TrueNAS box, 4U unit, and started with 4x4TB used server disks, now I want to expand that and use the remaining 8 bays I planned out but it somehow feels like a down payment for a nice house if I want anything other than used, small stuff.
If I had the money I would like to go for 10-12TB disks in the remaining bays, but that can go upwards of €2300 from the store I mainly shop at, and that is WITH a 20% discount currently..
@axelrafn @scottgal Why not incrementally add storage as mirrors? Sure, your overall storage efficiency is less but it gives you much greater flexibility in your upgrade path.
I recently went from a 6 x 8TB RAIDZ2 to 2 x 18 TB mirror for about $300 (mfg refurbished drives). I did lose a little capacity in the switch, but wasn't using it all anyway and when I need more will add another pair of whatever's cheapest per TB and migrate a pool.
@nerdvm @scottgal yeah, I have actually been leaning that way anyhow, get two big new/newish drives and create a new pool. My current pool is 4x4TB in a RAIDZ1, 12TB usable storage. If I get two +12TB and put in a mirror I can have two separate pools, one for less important stuff and the other for important. I could make the RAIDZ1 into a 4x4TB RAIDZ2 instead, less TB but more safety.
@axelrafn Tier your storage for efficient data costs...
