My mom, who is in her 70s, and not particularly tech savvy, just explained that she hates Google now, because the first results are always AI, which just pulls from other sources and is usually inaccurate.

So let’s stop assuming that non-techies, older people, and mothers and grandmothers are too naive to see through the hype. Mostly it’s the tech bros and finance douches who are too stupid to actually understand what they’re boosting.

@josh0 Google's search is its #1 product. What happens when they break it completely - when *no-one* trusts it and they're up to their eyeballs in debt? This rush to AI could kill them.

@BonehouseWasps @josh0 Don't threaten us with a good time.

@dalias @josh0 It sounds good but Google crashing suddenly would likely decimate the tech sector. I suspect that AI will anyway in the medium term - unless they magically find a way to make it profitable but something like that would be disastrous for people's jobs and not just at Google.

@BonehouseWasps @josh0 Again, don't threaten me with a good time. "Decimate the tech sector" is music to my ears. I utterly despise this entire industry/sector.

@BonehouseWasps @josh0 The internet, and supporting communication & computing infrastructure, needs to exist for real world business and public purposes that are actually productive and pro-social. Not for techbros to keep bombarding society with their latest scams.

@dalias @josh0 I don't necessarily disagree, it's just that a lot of good people are going to get hurt at the same time. I'm also not sure if what comes after will necessarily be better.

@BonehouseWasps @josh0 Good people have had enough time to read the room and get out...

@dalias @josh0 If a tech sector crash does occur, it won't just be people who work in tech are affected, it would cause a global recession. I lost two jobs to a combination of Brexit and Covid. I was on the "right side" of both.

@BonehouseWasps @josh0 They're already trying to create that but with them coming out on top. I'd rather it happen in a way they crash hardest.
