I left my job abruptly yesterday over a disagreement about how to handle a situation involving a speaker at company all-hands suggesting we should check out Kanye's interview.

In my mind, it should be a no-brainer for an exec/leadership team to clearly state they whole-heartedly disagree with such a recommendation and Kanye's views on genocide and Nazism. Any reluctance on this front is unacceptable and an implicit endorsement that this kind of hate-speech is ok.

@dizzyd that sounds horrible, but so much respect for you

@dizzyd thank you for doing that and I hugely admire your choice. I know you’ve had health concerns and health care being tied to work could have made this more a concern for you than others. Thank you for setting this example, too.

@dizzyd also, if I can be helpful in finding a role that deserves you, I would be happy to help.

@marcprecipice all referrals welcome at this point. :)

@dizzyd wow…it is not easy to do this. Thank you.

@dizzyd This clown doesn’t speak for all African Americans!!!

@bjsmith1967 @dizzyd We know. I promise, we know. You're definitely not all crazy ass shitbags. Turns out it's like just that one dude and maybe a couple others.

@dizzyd bravo. Could not have been easy. But definitely admirable.

@dizzyd That's commendable of you. Sorry it came to that.

@dizzyd I really admire you prioritizing your principles in a hard situation.

@dizzyd if you don't mind me asking, I'm curious about the nuance.

Was the reason the speaker was telling you to check it out was because of a "to fight evil you must know it" type of reason, or a "you should read this it's good stuff" type of reason?

In other words, was the speaker advocating for that mindset that they were asking you to review, or presenting it as a cautionary tale to avoid?

@cosmiccleric does it matter?

If it was a "joke": "We're sorry X made that joke and we unequivocally don't agree with Kanye's statements"

If it was "serious": "We're sorry X made that statement and we unequivocally don't agree with Kanye's statements".

Either way, easy-peasy to be clear.

@dizzyd I wasn't phrasing it as a joke or not, though.

I was asking along the lines if the person was telling you see this to learn this to know how to fight this, vs. see this and learn this to be like this.

That nuance matters.

@cosmiccleric not really; if you want to study the arguments of fascism and antisemitism, you can do it without giving an audience to those practicing it

@marypcbuk Disagree.

And regardless, I was inquiring into the intent of the people doing the presentation, why they would do such a thing.

If they were doing it to be bold and promote that negativity that would be shocking. A propaganda presentation.

But if they were doing it as a cautionary tale, to say these are the warning signs to look out for and not fall into, then that means something else entirely. An educational presentation.

Content and nuance matters.

@marypcbuk as an addendum, to elaborate on my disagreement of your statement, I'm speaking towards things like the Holocaust Museum.

To fight an evil you must know about it, you can't bury your head in the sand about it.

Context and nuance matters.

@cosmiccleric sources like the Holocaust Museum are why you don't have to consume fascist and antisemitic viewpoints directly and give an audience to the fascists and antisemites; you can learn about the problems without amplifying the hate speech

@marypcbuk Well if the presentation was made in the same way as an exhibit you would see as you're walking the halls of the Holocaust Museum, wouldn't both be educational?

It seems like you're thinking people who believe in the evils/lies are actually litetally standing in the room, making a propaganda presentation??

I couldn't determine that, from the OP publish, so I was inquiring further, trying to determine that, eirher way.

Context and nuance matters.

@cosmiccleric "check out kanye's speech" implies directly consuming it, not reading someone's expert take on it; but even if it was the latter, suggesting that you subject everyone in the company to something that even at an academic level could be distressing to a whole lot of folks? why would that be appropriate for a speaker to kick off at a work event with no warning to people in advance so they could choose whether or not to be there?

@marypcbuk I'm already aware. I think you may be reading too much into my query.

I was just seeing the OP punlish and thinking "No that can't be true, there must be something more to the story than that, right? Who would have the gall to literally do propaganda for hate inside of a corporate meeting? Let me ask for clarification."

And to be blunt, it was just a minor curiosity, and my asking was just trying to drive some activity here on the new social network site (vs the old one).

@cosmiccleric there are so many people ready to do propaganda in corporate meetings that it gets exhausting 😥

@cosmiccleric yes, it would mean that they are worryingly naive

@dizzyd Thank you for standing up for your principles on this very important topic. I wish you and your family the best. I’ll see if there’s anything I can do to help, but I’m sure there are others here that are deserving of your presence!

@dizzyd we’ll done! Definitely the right thing to do, I hope you’re able to find a better and more ethical employer.

@dizzyd check out because he's a fascist tit?

No. Perhaps not.

@dizzyd damn, sorry to hear this, but major respect for you.

@dizzyd

Did the exec/leadership team disagree with #Ye views?

Were they showing it because they agreed with his views, or because the scandal and fallout caused by the #Kanye video was something the company needed to deal with?

@dizzyd i have no idea in which professional situation, except maybe journalistic, would it be ok to make such a suggestion.

@dizzyd That was a huge and courageous thing to do. I do hope you have other job possibilities lined up. I have been in a similar situation myself.
The fear of not being able to meet mortgage payments and meet my bills was not as bad as the sheer hellish continuation of that job.
When it's just plain wrong and you walk out it's empowering.
I picked apples for a pittance for 3 months till I got a new post. Fine. Got fit and tanned. Ate a lot of apples.... 😉

@dizzyd whenever management does something like this, I think of Michael Jordan saying “Republican buy shoes, too.” Unfortunate.

@dizzyd
I don't know you but I admire your courageous decision.
"Silence is complicity."
You clearly walk the talk.
Much respect 🙏

@dizzyd thank you! I’m sorry that you are out of a job, but your integrity will assure future employment at a better job.

@dizzyd Good for you to stand up for your principles. Not an easy move to make.

@dizzyd Massive respect to you for upholding your principles and taking this action.

@dizzyd mad props. Thanks for making a difference 🙏

@dizzyd Much respect!
Thank you for standing up against them. I hope you get another job quickly.

@dizzyd
Yep, not sure what was the point. Hopefully you will find better employment.

@dizzyd Should be no equivocating or debate on whether or not, that would be useful.

@dizzyd I applaud your integrity and doing what is right...(I agree with you)
