This guy gets it. https://tailscale.com/blog/new-internet
@dma I’ve used Tailscale for years, really like it and recommended to many of my friends. The article is great and agree with most of it… up to where the vision became a world where everyone has Tailscale installed.
I see where it’s coming from but as much as I truest them I’d rather the new internet to be based on an open protocol than on a product owned by a company
@mario fair enough. I wonder how much the "new internet" can be built on top of wireguard, certs, etc and how much it needs the Tailscale later, and how much Tailscale is syntactic sugar on top.
or if @tailscale would be open to an interop with an open source implementation of their protocol.
@dma @mario @tailscale they support in some forms Headscale (https://github.com/juanfont/headscale), an open source reimplementation of the Tailscale control server. As far as I know, one of the maintainers work at Tailscale, they have discussions about protocol development and features and they added support for custom control servers to the official clients.
@dma excellent post, pretty rare that I agree with everything said in a corporate blog. Appreciate you sharing it.
