A progressive political advocacy organization I have supported both philosophically and financially sent me an invitation last week to a holiday party / fundraiser. I replied that I couldn't believe they were having an unmasked holiday party in the middle of a triple pandemic and this had permanently damaged my opinion of them. They did not respond. They sent me another invitation today. I unsubscribed from their mailing list and I will no longer support them. This is not OK. #COVID @novid
@jik @novid I never thought I’d witness mass delusion on a global scale about an issue with such undeniable and profound impacts on the health of the majority of the world’s population. Even trying to string the adjectives together to describe it feels hollow and hopeless.
Millions of people in my country alone (the U.S.) are now disabled from a dangerous airborne pathogen that is spreading out of control. Millions more to come. And the response is a collective shrug.
This is not OK.
@JessieHart @jik @novid With my few remaining IRL social contacts, anything I say now is just for my own mental well-being more than their physical well-being. I just don’t want to have to live with the knowledge that I could have warned people I care about and did not.
Mostly keeping quiet now, but I did send this to some on Signal the other day.

@wndlb @JessieHart @jik @novid They’re still better than nothing, but I use a negative rapid test result now as just a confirmation that the asymptomatic Covid-careful person I want to visit probably won’t infect me, and only if they took the test with a throat swab before the nose part and did so within the past few hours.
Even then, my wife and I mostly just don’t share air with anyone outside our household.
@wndlb @edsuom @JessieHart @novid Wih current strains, they frequently don't show a positive test until 3–5 days after you're infected. You may be contagious during at least part of that time. In some cases — a minority, but not none — you can be infected and never test positive on a rapid test. They're not totally useless but definitely not a 100% reliable way to determine contagiousness.

This! So much this. Most of my family is lost. I have close to zero friends left. I have given up trying to talk sense into anyone.
I have dark thoughts of having some of these people suffer, so that our long collective nightmare ends.
Until then, I will keep playing defense.
One thing they can't accuse me of is not warning them.
@mathew1927 @edsuom @JessieHart @jik @novid I’ve stopped trying to warn people, they simply ignore it & refuse to do anything obvious to keep themselves safe. Trying to warn them just made me angry. Like others I’ve never seen denial on this scale.
@mathew1927 @edsuom @JessieHart @jik @novid I have found the 6000 series plus a wide lensed pair of goggles to be both practical and comfortable. Wore this while waiting for my girlfriend’s car at the shop over 2 hours. Good goggles resist fogging a long time too. They test drive the cars after repairs, so I wear gloves too.

Whoa, I like those goggles. Do you have a link to buy them? I haven't found ones that nice. And I usually wear the 6000 series, so those seem like a good choice for me.

@edsuom @JessieHart @jik @novid: you have just captured my Covid life story. Isolated in a way I could never imagine as I continue to protect myself and my family from a deadly airborne pathogen that appears to degrade our immune systems with every onslaught. Silly me.
