The overlap between the people whose job involves dealing with the fallout of the Crowdstrike update and people who have time to shitpost about the fallout of the Crowdstrike update is very narrow.
@evacide Half the people I know were either running around like their hair was on fire or sitting around waiting for things to be fixed.
@evacide I can assure you that I am in that band of (un?)lucky few lol
Is it on the order of magnitude that some are embroiled in? No, but it's definitely an order of magnitude more than my usual load.
@evacide S-tier shade.
@evacide That is an astonishingly good analysis, and you are known for good analyses. You are right, I have noticed it without really noticing it.
@evacide Then there's the 1% who are mastodon admins dealing with issues caused by the volume of shitposting about the Crowdstrike update
@evacide It's load-bearing shitposting.
@evacide I've built a career working on the tech nobody else wants to touch. SCO Unix? OS/2? You betcha. Today is definitely my day.
after 15 years of actual time on 7x24 on call, i shifted careers to not be in the operational critical path.
days like today definitely validate this for me personally but also remind me of the kind of heroic effort and human cost fixing things like this takes.
@evacide this omits the fact that like 20% of the tech industry has been laid off and has to shitpost to avoid the existential crises
@evacide and yet somehow I managed both today :)
@briankrebs You have often been part of a very narrow overlap.
@evacide I got grazed by it. My department was impacted, but only about 100 devices within a local area. The morning was rough, but now I'm in popcorn mode.
@evacide - Truth. My team is dealing with the onsite issues but I and a handful of others are remote and can't do anything to help physically. So shitpost it has been - in between meetings.
@evacide I was here on Mastodon when the event started, and I saw snark about the event in my feed before I saw any details about what was actually happening, so I guess I have a list of folks with the time to shitpost now.
@evacide Very true. I'm so grateful to be on paternity leave right now. Just eating popcorn and enjoying all the shitposts. I look forward to hearing the war stories when I get back to work next month.
@evacide tbh the only reason we are not is pure chance, that it was not a vendor in our stack...
@evacide that's why I'm just now catching up on my feed
