All of the posts on Mastodon about how the Blue Sky team was silly for releasing a social media network in 2023 without blocking and moderation, even in private beta, and that the Blue Sky team should have known what would happen...
...are being written on Mastodon: a social media platform that in 2023, still doesn't take into account that Black users face a disproportionate amount of very specific types of abuse, and is missing key features that would make the Black population safer. 
It really is the social media equivalent of white folks telling Black folks that Boston is less racist than the South, and completely ignoring any Black folk that live in Boston or anywhere else in the US trying to talk about what their real, lived, experiences have been.
Many Mastodon users are just completely convinced of the superiority of their moderation philosophy, and they are as happy to ignore the few Black Fedi users in 2023 as they were in 2017.
@mekkaokereke I'm sure you've mentioned this before, but Mastodon search is terrible, so could you please say again what features Mastodon is missing that would help alleviate abuse Black people face here?

I didn’t realize this was such a problem and naively thought that the lack of a search function on Mastodon meant there would be fewer racially charged comments and attacks. Thank you for bringing it to our attention and letting us know what we can do.

When a non-white, non-Christian minority reports someone for being a racist shit, they shouldn’t be ignored or treated like they’re the problem. Admins and mods shouldn’t be harassing the very people who are being targeted.
I’ve been harassed and reported by the very people whose job (supposedly) it is to protect me.
@heathborders @mekkaokereke Wonderful that trans and LGBTQ+ are protected on the Fediverse, but absolutely shit that ethnic and religious minorities are not. We get told that we’re the problem, because we don’t fit whatever narrow idea folks have for mastodon.
@InayaShujaat @heathborders @mekkaokereke many LGBT people are targeted as well. I think the unifying experience is that minorities are targeted.
@heathborders @slut @mekkaokereke re-read my comment. I didn’t say they’re not. I said it’s wonderful that they’re protected. I also said that the same protection should extend to ethnic and religious minorities. Unfortunately, it is not. The protection only applies to WHITE LGBTQ+ people. Accept it or not, but even the fediverse is super white, with very little room for ethnic and religious diversity.
@InayaShujaat @heathborders @mekkaokereke I would advise you re-read my comment as I said trans people are also on the receiving end of some of the same abuses that religious and ethnic minorities are on the fediverse. All minorities are, because as you said, there is a homogeneous majority here. While it might not seem like it, I am letting you know there are a plethora of alt right instances and trolls targeting trans people, there are blocklists that target trans people whenever someone brings up anything the trans community is going through, there is backlash against anyone who isn't a model-minority of trans. There are large instances whose admins allow people to bully trans people. There are people that ask trans people to cw anything related to their lives. Hope that helps to clarify that trans people are not whole cloth 'protected', and that there are likely instances that perhaps your idea of protection (literally just making your own instance together with other people) extends to in similar ways to religious minorities? That isn't a great solution and it is why I am saying mastodon/ fedi is lacking, for minorities.

I’ve discovered that gender identity and sexual orientation matter less than ethnicity here. Be a person of colour or a Muslim, and you WILL get whitesplained every single time you mention ethnic and religious harassment on here.
I’ve only seen true allyship from trans and LGBTQ+ folks of colour. The rest are too white.

You’re exactly what folks are talking about. This right here is why ethnic and religious minorities don’t feel welcome and safe here.
@InayaShujaat after we establish welcomeness and safety here, would there ever be a time to nerd out over the details of this ethical debate? I'd like that, as long as everyone feels welcome and safe of course.
