I swear to the gods if I see one more "the choice is clear" between BlueSky and Mastodon that deliberately goes out of their way to make claims that ignore the reality of how things _actually work here_ I am going to scream.

@hrefna yes, although to be fair I also want to scream when "the choice is clear" posters here go out of their way to make claims that ignore the reality of how things actually work there. BREAKING: just because a bunch of grifting AI companies (including Mozilla) are trying to raise $30 million doesn't actually mean it costs that much to run a relay over there. But oh well, that's what happens when you listen to "experts" who also don't know what they're talking about https://infosec.exchange/@thenexusofprivacy/113886079718846368

Infosec ExchangeThe Nexus of Privacy (@thenexusofprivacy@infosec.exchange)Hahaha from Cory's latest > "The reason Bluesky is so centralized is that it's really expensive to run an alternative Bluesky server that provides a home for users who have left the main server (a "relay" in Bluesky-ese)." No that's not even remotely what a relay is and no relays aren't the expensive thing to run. @laurenshof@indieweb.social

YES!

There are real tradeoffs and real problems that we can discuss. There are in particular significant cultural differences that can be called out!

But that's not the same thing as the sheer number of things that, AFAICT, are just made up out of whole cloth or are being repeated based on comparisons that are barely comparing two types of fruit in what they look at, let alone apples to apples.

@thenexusofprivacy

Exactly. There's certainly a lot to critique there -- I've written about how Bluesky is very problematic in some very important ways -- and there are some very real tradeoffs. Focusing on the problems of this alternate-universe imagined "Bluesky" obscures real issues (both there and here) and misses the opportunity to identify, highlight, and build on fedi's strengths. Sigh. At this point though I'm not even bothering to try to correct the people repeatedly lying about this, it hasn't done any good so far.
